Can the filly beat the boys in the ATC Derby? | Punt Drunk

Punt Drunk Daily – 10/4/21

Good morning punters and welcome to a special The Championships edition of #PuntDrunk

We have four Group 1 races to sink our teeth into throughout the afternoon at Randwick as the two week festival of racing is set to get underway this afternoon from 11:35am!

Buckle up legends, today is going to be our best day on the punt!

Is Anamoe an “M”?

There is no such thing as a certainty in a Group 1, but if the Godolphin stable have the colt Anamoe good to go today, then who beats him? Four Moves ahead for John Sargent and perhaps the Peter Moody-trained Lightsaber could give him a scare, but following two minor placings in Group 1 races we are almost chips in on Anamoe. James McDonald will have him in the second half of the field and looking for the Street Boss colt to be charging down the middle of the track on his way to Group 1 glory.

Can The Filly Beat The Boys?

A massive field of 16 is set to compete in the ATC Derby and only one of the 16 is a filly and ultimately it is the race favourite Montefilia. With two Group 1 victories to her name already in ten career starts we know she can get the job done at the highest level. In a race with many chances, Gai Waterhouse finally get her first win in the Derby when last start winner Yaletown steps out for her. Throw in the likes of Sky Lab and Lion’s Roar or even Rocket Spade, Khoekhoe and Young Werther. Jesus, this is a deadset dart job!

This Will Be A Quick TJ Smith Stakes!

Any race with Nature Strip and Eduardo in it is set to be a handlebars down type race, and all eyes will be on the leading duo to sea if they can see out a red hot 1200m. Both struggled to do so in The Everest during the spring, and the swoopers gobbled them up over the final furlong. One of the runners to do so was Bivouac who has long been set for the TJ Smith Stakes as his Grand Final but he has been down on form this campaign, so who else can we look to? Think of Group 1 winners September Run or Masked Crusader, more importantly Masked Crusader. He is two for two at the Randwick 1200m, and is also 4 from 4 over 1200m in general. Boy, this is going to be a top class sprint.

Could A Non-Winner Win The Doncaster?

20 runners, yes 20 runners is set to compete in one of Australia’s most iconic races, the Doncaster Handicap (Mile). All Star Mile victor Mugatoo is set to go around, as is Mo’unga and last year’s winner Nettoyer, and the rising star Aegon. The race is always an edge of the seat type, but could the biggest tease in racing Avilius finally get another Group 1 win? His last Group 1 success was in the Tancred Stakes back in 2019! But boy does he look well placed on a rain affected track with 56kg on his back.

As always, here is hoping by the end of the day our wallets are nice and fat and we aiming for a beverage higher up on the shelf for all the right reasons!

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

It takes some sort of runner to peak three times in a campaign. Anamoe was an unlucky third in the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield and then flashed home in the Golden Slipper to finish second. It is third time lucky surely for the Godolphin star and from barrier five JMac will ride him cold and be charging home late to get the job done in style for his first Group 1.
