Zaaki bolts past big names in 2021 Cox Plate betting

Zaaki wins Doomben Cup

Having won the Group 1 Doomben Cup as if he was Winx, Zaaki is the new $4.20 favourite with online bookmakers for the 2021 Cox Plate.

Prior to his win on Saturday, the Annabel Neasham-trained six-year-old was a $17 chance to take out the best weight-for-age race in the country.

Zaaki had put the writing on the wall with a dominant win in the Group 2 AD Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast the start prior, but his scintillating performance last Saturday has made him the clear standout for October’s Moonee Valley feature.

Last year’s Caulfield Cup winner, Verry Elleegant, is his closest rival in the early Cox Plate markets at $11, while untapped talents Ayrton ($13) and Anamoe ($15) are also prominent.

The 2020 Cox Plate winner, Sir Dragonet, and the 2021 All Star Mile winner, Mugatoo, are $17 in Cox Plate futures betting, but both were well beaten on Saturday by Zaaki and will need to find something to be competitive in the spring.
