Where Flemington Racecourse – 448 Epsom Rd, Flemington, VIC 3031
When Saturday, October 1, 2022
First Race 12:40pm AEST

Spring is well and truly in the air as Turnbull Stakes Day rolls around at Flemington on Saturday afternoon for a massive nine-race program. The highlight of the day is the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) with most of the combatants headed towards the Caulfield Cup in a fortnight. The card is brimming with talent as every race is a black-type event, and HorseBetting’s Victorian form expert is confident he can steer you into a few winners throughout the day. The track is rated a Soft 5 with the rail out 9m for the entire circuit, with the meeting commencing at 12:40pm AEST.

Race 1: Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m)

The traditional opener to Turnbull Stakes Day is the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes and it is the punters first race day look at the new season two-year-olds. It is hard to have a firm opinion in a field full of debutants, but the way the Gai Waterhouse-trained Aditi was held back in a recent Flemington jumpout suggested that she had a bit of talent under the hood. She wasn’t asked for an effort out in front over 800m and despite trialling on the inner track at Flemington, at least has the experience of being at the track she debuts at. Look for Blake Shinn to take her to the front and as walys, it is no disadvantage to be up on speed as an early season two-year-old.

Race 2: Paris Lane Stakes (1400m)

We do not need to wait too long for our best bet of the day as the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained Visinari returns in the Listed Paris Lane Stakes. The five-year-old gelding returns from a short four-month spell and was last seen finishing a half-length off subsequent Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes placegetter Tuvalu back in June. He won three times and finished second on the other two starts from his five-start winter campaign and if he is anywhere near the level he produced earlier in the year, Visinari looks to have bigger fish to fry this campaign then just at Listed level. From barrier eight, look for Jamie Kah to have this guy settled outside the leader throughout and considering he already has two wins to his name when fresh, Visinari should prove too good for this lot.

Race 3: Edward Manifold Stakes (1100m)

With a bit of luck Visnari has saluted in the previous and we can take our winnings and load it on to the Andrew Forsman-trained She’s Licketysplit in the Edward Manifold Stakes. Despite needing to carry 59kg and needing to travel three wide with no cover in torrential rain, the three-year-old from New Zealand stuck on nicely to finish third behind Boogie Dancer and Sumatra in the Thousand Guineas Prelude. There’s no Boogie Dancer in this field and considering she goes around with no weight penalty this time round; she rates perfectly in a race like this. From barrier eight, look for Damian Lane to be aggressive and have the filly settled up on speed throughout and opt to take up the lead. She is already a Group 1 winner across the ditch and on class alone, She’s Licketysplit should have a bit too much talent for this field to handle.

Race 4: Rose Of Kingston Stakes (1400m)

The Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes is one of the more open races of the day and we are hoping the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Excelida can salute at a price. The six-year-old mare traditionally doesn’t show first-up (having placed just once from six fresh runs), but she dramatically improves with a run under her belt. Her first-up this run was a two-length defeat behind Zapateo and was on the heels of the progressive Chain Of Lightning in the How Now Stakes at Caulfield on September 17. She has two wins and a second-place finish from four second-up runs and with a win and a minor placing to her name already at the track and trip, we expect she will be hard to beat. Michael Dee will have her settled in the second half of the field throughout, but armed with a strong turn of foot, we expect Excelida will sprout wings down the centre of the track and ultimately prove too hard to hold out.

Selections:

Race 5: Danehill Stakes (1100m)

The Clayton Douglas-trained Giga Kick has three wins from as many starts and on the back of his impressive win in the Vain Stakes on August 13, he simply looks a class above his rivals in this. He won first-up down the Flemington straight over 1000m when defeating the smart Lascars and despite staying at 1100m in the Danehill Stakes, the Scissor Kick gelding looks well placed to bring up a fourth straight win. With Sunzou and Doull set to make this a genuinely run 1100m event, look for Craig Williams to have this bloke stalking the speed throughout and when asked for an effort, Giga Kick should be flying down the outside rail and stamp his claim as one of the key chances in the Coolmore Stud Stakes at the end of the month.

Selections:

Race 6: The Bart Cummings (2510m)

Win and you’re in to the 2022 Melbourne Cup, that is what is on offer for the winner of The Bart Cummings on Saturday. Having put in two eye-catching runs this campaign, we expect the Danny O’Brien-trained Vow And Declare to returns to the winners stall for the first time since his infamous win in the 2019 Melbourne Cup. Having been held up for a run upon straightening over 2500m last time out, the seven-year-old gelding still managed to hit the line with great intent and was only beaten two-lengths by the progressive High Emocean. A repeat effort of that run, the Vow And Declare is in this race up to his neck. He has shown throughout his career to be tactically versatile and as long as he sees clear air at the right time, Vow And Declare looks to be over the odds at $11 with some online betting sites.

Race 6 – Silk #2 Vow And Declare (5)

Race 7: Turnbull Stakes (2000m)

The last two Caulfield Cup winners Incentivise and Verry Elleegant managed to win the Turnbull Stakes on their way to winning the feature at Caulfield. A capacity field of 16 stayers will compete for the $1 million prize pool, with Gold Trip ($3.80) and Duais ($4.60) the fancied runners with online bookmakers.

Race 8: Gilgai Stakes (1200m)

The Group 2 Gilgai Stakes has assembled a strong field of 13 sprinters who will duke it out down the Flemington straight and with a bit of luck, Roch ‘N’ Horse can go one better than her runner-up effort in the Bobbie Lewis Quality. She was lipped out by Baller on that day when giving away a slight weight advantage but gets a 1.5kg weight swing on the same runner this time round. She has a strong affiliation with the Flemington straight having won the Newmarket Handicap earlier in the year at a massive price. Having drawn the widest barrier, the former Kiwi should be in clear air throughout just off the speed and when asked for an effort from Patrick Moloney, we expect she will find herself back in the winner’s stall on his way to a start in the Champions Sprint during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Selections:

Race 9: Super Impose Stakes (1800m)

Turnbull Stakes finishes up with the Listed Super Impose Stakes where a strong field of three-year-old colts and geldings will look to continue their VRC Derby preparation in a positive way. Having won the Derby Trial at this track and trip on September 18 against a similar field, the Andrew Forsman-trained Mr Maestro looks to have a class edge on most of his rivals. He handled the Heavy 10 conditions last time out with great aplomb and looked to appreciate every bit of the 1800m and will be the one they have to beat once more. He draws to gain a perfect run in transit from barrier six under Damian Lane and as long as he does not get trapped in traffic on the home turn, Mr Maestro should be bring up a second straight win at the Flemington 1800m.
