Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington is the traditional ‘moving day’ for all horses that have lofty Spring Carnival goals in their sight. On Saturday we will have a bumper card headlined by the $1 million Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, where a capacity field of 16 will battle it out over 2000m.

After having won the Australian Cup in the autumn, the Edward Cummings-trained Duais has opened the $4.20 favourite with online bookmakers. He is closely followed by the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained import Gold Trip, who sits on the second line of betting at $4.40. The two four-year-olds in the race are the Richard Litt-trained Profondo ($8.50) and the James Cummings trained-Alegron ($13) – but the chances don’t end there.

With the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Knights Order in the race, it is expected that he will be setting a strong tempo out in front, with Smokin’ Romans and Profondo taking the sit off him. At the back of the field, the swoopers – Duais, Great House, Inspirational Girl and Surefire – will be flying home, setting up for a cracking finish.

After impressively winning the Group 1 Australia Cup at this track and distance, the Edward Cummings-trained Duais is a deserving favourite in the 2022 Turnbull Stakes after a passable first-up sixth in the Group 1 George Main Stakes over 1600m on September 17. Since winning the Australia Cup and Tancred Stakes in the autumn over 2000m and 2400m, respectively, this five-year-old mare has gone straight to the top of the futures markets for the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup. This run in the Turnbull will not be her grand final by any means, but she relishes anything beyond 2000m, showing that she is one of the best stayers that Australia has to offer. Josh Parr will continue his close affiliation with this girl, and if she gets a good tempo and can peel out wide on the turn, she will be finishing very strong.

Numerian returned from his two-month spell with a very impressive second in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes over 1600m, and the Annabel Neasham-trained gelding will be looking for 2000m now. If John Allen can have this guy in the three-wide running line from barrier 12 or out the back with some cover, he could be the one to cause a boilover at great each-way odds.

Alegron and Gold Trip are also live chances in this year’s Turnbull Stakes. Considering Gold Trip has only ever won one race in his career, it is hard to have him as short as most betting sites do. Alegron will be attempting to become the second four-year-old to win the Turnbull Stakes, and we think it might just be too hot of a field for him to win this year.
