Townsville racing news

Racing heads north in Queensland on Thursday with a massive 10-race program at Townsville’s Cluden Park. The track is currently rated a Soft 5 with the rail out 5m from the 1000m to the winning post and 3m for the remainder of the course. Race 1 will jump at 11:32am AEST, with the last scheduled for 5:05pm.

Wednesday racing tips for Townsville

Best Bet
Race 6 – Family Star @ $1.45

Family Star is shooting for three on the trot in a 1000m Class 2 Plate tomorrow and looks primed to get it done. His last two wins were by 2.3 and 5.8 lengths respectively, with the latter being on a soft track. He drops back to 1000m from the 1200m, which could be a slight concern, but Scott Sheargold will go forward from barrier three and make every post a winner. Out of the same sire as Black Caviar, Jeffrey Caught’s promising 3yo gelding has speed to burn. He should justify his short quote and give punters a boost to start the second half of this bumper card.

Next Best
Race 1 – Higher Realm @ $2.40

Roy Chillemi will have the top two chances in the opener, with neither Tennessee Boy or Higher Realm missing the placings in their short careers. We are siding with the latter, which got the upper hand over the stablemate last start at this track. From barrier six, Stephen Wilson should settle just behind the speed and prove too good late again in an attempt to make it two on the bounce. It could be a big week for the famous North Queensland ‘Orange with the Yellow H’ silks with stable superstar Tyzone looking to go one better in Saturday’s Stradbroke Handicap, and we hope Higher Realm can kickstart the celebrations.

Best Value
Race 7 – Red Phantom @ $9

Senior rider Chris Whiteley combines with Red Phantom again in the seventh event on the program and appears to be a live each-way chance. The son of Redoute’s Choice got a mile back last start on a very heavy track at Townsville and worked home very well into fifth. There appears to be a fair bit of speed on, which will suit Red Phantom with the wide draw. He is one from one at the 2000m, while the last start suggests the extra 400m will work in his favour. Despite failing to win at Townsville in five goes, it’ll be the first time the 5yo will be getting past a mile. Happy to play each way.
