Townsville racing preview – Thursday, March 11

Eight races will be run and won at Townsville’s Cluden Park on Thursday. The track is rated a Soft 5, the rail is +0.5m position for the entire circumference of the course, and the first race is set to jump at 1:35pm local time. Let’s look at the best bets on offer.

Best Bet: Robig

Roy Chillemi and Wanderson D’Avila combine with talented three-year-old Robig, who is looking to make it three straight victories having won comfortably in his two most recent outings at Cairns. The gelded son of Rothesay will have to carry the big weight of 60.5kg, but he has drawn well in barrier five and should find a lovely run in transit off a decent tempo. This is easier than his last outing, and we expect him to win it.

Best BetRace 5 – Robig (#2) $3.80 with Sportsbet

Next Best: Mbappe

After a disappointing spring campaign, former Kris Lees galloper Mbappe is having his first start in North Queensland with the Troy Clive stable. The four-year-old won his maiden at start two at Scone in nice style but hasn’t been able to win since in a further 12 runs, although he placed consecutively four times in that period. He was stretched out to 2000m at the end of last campaign, which culminated late in 2020, before being relocated to the state’s far north. In much weaker class, he is quite well in at the weights and can win first up over 1300m. This should be the confidence booster he needs.

Next BestRace 8 – Mbappe (#5) $11 with Sportsbet

Best Value: Last Chance

Five-year-old gelding Last Chance resumes in a winnable race on Thursday after putting the writing on the wall last campaign with some good wins. The nine-time winner got home comfortably in a recent trial at Rockhampton over 900m, so he should be ready to go at the 1000m first up. Ash Butler knows the horse well and has won on him once before, so he will be looking to make it another when he partners the son of Tycoon Ruler in this from barrier 10. On class alone, he should go very close.

Best ValueRace 6 – Last Chance (#3) $16 with Sportsbet
