Townsville racing news

Townsville plays host to eight races on Tuesday with the first set to jump at 12:37pm AEST. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but drying conditions could see an upgrade by the time the meeting kicks off. The rail has been moved out 4m from the 1000m to the winning post, and just 2.5m for the remainder of the course.

Best Bet
Race 1 – Champagne At Dawn @ $3.40

Zoe Hohn and Brad Pengelly combine in the opener with debut runner-up Champagne At Dawn. Sent around a $10 chance at Rockhampton three weeks ago, the three-year-old filly found the front in the straight but didn’t quite have the fitness to go on with it and was beaten 0.2 lengths by the heavily backed Kotabahru. She maps to get a lovely run from barrier five under Pengelly and should have every chance to break her duck at just her second start.

Next Best
Race 6 – Unbiased @ $2.20

We declared this runner last start at this track and were left with egg on our face when the seven-year-old failed to reel in the leader, So You Dream. He finds a much more suitable race here, moving up to 2000m and down a kilo, albeit in a weight-for-age race. He has had two starts at this track and distance, with a win and a second to the talented The Harrovian in last year’s Townsville Cup. We won’t see the gelding too close to the speed from barrier nine in the 11-horse field, but we can expect to see him charging home over the top of them in the straight under Brad Pengelly. It might also be worth having something on the gun hoop to win the Jockey Challenge.

Best Value
Race 7 – Bold Endeavour @ $7

Formerly trained by Garnett Taylor on the Sunshine Coast, Bold Endeavour finds a very suitable race in the penultimate event. We are putting a line through his last-start failure at this track and distance, as the five-year-old was posted wide due to the outside barrier in a fast-run race. He is a winner at the track in the past and gains the services of senior hoop Scott Sheargold, who should get the gelding into a nice spot from barrier seven. Two starts back he finished second at Cairns under a big weight, and he should be suited by the spacing of his runs this time in. On his day, he is the best horse in this race and could be very hard to beat.
