Christmas Handicap 2020 preview

The Listed Christmas Handicap is the feature event on Morphettville’s nine-race card on Saturday. A field of 14 with one emergency has been accepted for the $100,000 race over 1200m. The 2019 edition was taken out by Tony and Calvin McEvoy’s Ef Troop, and the pair saddle up three runners for this year’s edition.

It’s near impossible to ignore the form of One More Jack at Morphettville. He has four wins from five starts at the track and is undefeated from four starts at the track and distance, including a last-start win in the Listed City Of Marion Stakes. On that form alone he is a clear standout pick, but the record in general is hard to ignore. He has won six of his last nine races and two of his last three, where his only fault was a defeat on Melbourne Cup Day down the Flemington straight. Paul Gatt retains the ride, and from barrier four he should find himself with a bit of cover early on and prove hard to hold out in the featured event.

If it’s hard to ignore the form of One More Jack, then how do you ignore the form of Star Hills? He has won his last five races on the bounce, and coming off a four-week freshen up he looks primed to bring up his first win at Listed level. With plenty of early speed drawn underneath him, the query is he may get stranded out wide. In a race where they will not go slowly, that may prove detrimental to his chances. However, he is racing in career-best form and is rock hard fit, so if anyone in this race can overcome that adversity, it is this guy.

Having been disqualified two starts back, connections would have been thrilled to see Left Hand Man back in the winner’s stall a fortnight ago. He’s had his struggles on the course proper at Morphettville and tends to do his best work on the Parks track, but he looks ready to run a big race here. Four starts ago he ran to within two lengths of One More Jack after giving that galloper a fair start entering the home straight. If he can settle a little closer in the moving line this time, there’s no reason he can’t be fighting out the finish.
