Spring Stakes 2020 betting tips, odds & strategy

Behemoth
Behemoth returns to the track this Saturday in the Groups 3 Spring Stakes at Morphettville.

Morphettville plays host to the Group 3 Spring Stakes on Saturday as two stars of South Australian racing return: Behemoth and Dalasan, who share the top of the market. The speed will be genuine for the 1200m affair with the likes of Crown Fontein, Morvada and Rainmoth included in the final field.

Best Bet
Behemoth @ $2.70

We think the market has got this one spot on. Behemoth has had plenty of hard-luck stories, including his most recent run when fourth in the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap behind Trekking in May after missing the kick and storming home late. There will be plenty of speed engaged, which will suit the All Too Hard gelding’s pattern, but he should be able to settle a touch closer from barrier five for Todd Pannell if he jumps with them. He should have the wood on his rivals over the six furlongs.

Next Best
Dalasan @ $3.90

Dalasan went to a new level in the autumn, winning the Port Adelaide Guineas and the Chairman’s Handicap before running second to Russian Camelot in the Group 1 South Australian Derby over 2500m. Prior to those three starts, the son of Dalakhani finished fifth in both the Australian Guineas and All Star Mile. He was a winner of this race last year with 51.5kg and rises to 58.5kg this time, and he also has to overcome the outside alley. We can expect Jason Holder to settle towards the rear and finish off strongly, but Dalasan may have lost his quick turn of foot just a touch.

Best Value
More Than Exceed @ $11

More Than Exceed appears great value in the Spring Stakes at $11. Phillip Stokes’ five-year-old gelding comes in off a win in the Mildura Cup where he beat Coming Around, who subsequently brained them at Flemington, so the form in fantastic for a race like this. Drawn the rails for Kayla Crowther, he should get the run of the race just off the speed and catch a run in the straight. His record at Morphettville is outstanding (5:3-2-0) and he’s been in the quinella nine times from 14 attempts over the 1200m. He is used to carrying big weight, so he can be right in the finish here.
