Best Bet
Race 7 – Bold Hunter @ $3.70

We are always happy to back Garnett Taylor’s horses when he sends them north and Bold Hunter is no exception here. The 3yo gelding by Spirit Of Boom was a debut winner at Dalby over 1100m before going down in a photo finish behind Bantu Bay at Rockhampton in his second start. Taylor spaced his next start and sent him to Doomben, where the gelding finished fifth less than two lengths behind Shadow Of Time and Rebel Rock, which are both subsequent Saturday Brisbane winners. On that occasion he finished half a length in front of Cellarmaid, which ran second to Vanna Girl before winning on Saturday at Doomben in impressive style. He had a trial on June 2 and has the one win from one first-up run in the past, so the freshen up should suit well. Ryan Wiggins will push forward from the outside alley and make it hard for anyone to run him down. The 1200m should be perfect first up in Mackay for what looks a city-class horse.

Next Best
Race 5 – Chezblack @ $3.80

Promising mare Chezblack returns to the races after eight months off the scene in a 1050m Benchmark 69. Now trained by Shane Sigvart, the ex-South Australian mare has had six runs in Queensland’s north, saluting in three of those and finishing a luckless second on another occasion. All three wins at Townsville came in brilliant fashion and we expect the Foxwedge mare to get back to her winning ways in her first-up assignment. Justin Stanley will ride for just the second time and will likely have to settle midfield, wide with cover from barrier 10. The horse’s sectional times are fantastic, clocking the fastest averages of the field. There is plenty of speed engaged in the sprint trip, so Stanley should have a race to suit. Chezblack can win this and go on to bigger and better things this campaign.

Best Value
Race 8 – Mr Attitude @ $20

Last year’s ‘King of the North’, Mr Attitude, returns to the scene of his successes in an open handicap. Winning the Mackay Newmarket last year ahead of Niccanova justifies the 63.5kg, which is of slight concern, but the form around has been solid. We haven’t seen the 6yo in the winner’s stall since Townsville’s Cleveland Bay, but he has had to carry the grandstand in all of those efforts. He hasn’t stretched out to this distance for 12 months, which is going to be a huge advantage. The gelding has won five times over the 1300m (8:5-1-2), with three of those victories coming at this track (T/D:3:3-0-0). Last start he was sent around in a 1000m race at Toowoomba where he was simply outsprinted, finishing eighth of nine. The winner of that race was Jadentom, which has since won at Doomben over Ozark, the horse that ran second in the Cleveland Bay. Mr Attitude has a few fences to overcome, but he should get a sweet run in transit at a track and trip he absolutely eats up. Definitely worth something each way.
