The standard of racing continues to rise as we approach the key races in the 2020 Spring Carnival, and this weekend we head to Flemington for another quality card. The feature event is the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes, where the talented Russian Camelot is well backed.
With three Group 2 races and three Listed stakes on the card, there is plenty to learn going forward. Melbourne is expecting between 15-30mm of rain on race day, so the current Good 4 rating may well be downgraded early in the card.
Saturday racing tips for Flemington
Race 6 – Windstorm @ $2.25 Sportsbet
Grant and Alana Williams have themselves yet another star in Windstorm, who looks the best bet on the card. Rain shouldn’t hinder this gelding’s efforts, as he is yet to run outside of the top two in four starts on wet tracks, with three of those being wins. He gets William Pike back on board and if his first-up run at Caulfield was anything to go by, he will charge home over the top of them late in preparation for a massive Spring Carnival.
Race 1 – Persan @ $4.40 Sportsbet
There is plenty of hype around the favourite, Schabau (#4), but he seems a touch under the odds at $2.20 second up. That’s why Persan seems a nice play to kick off the card, as he is rock-hard fit and yet to miss a place this campaign. He’ll be on the back of the favourite the whole way, and the benefit of being deep into a campaign should pay dividends at the back end of the race. We may get better odds on the day, but nothing too crazy.
Race 3 – My Gold Bracelet @ $10/$2.70 EW Sportsbet
Mick Price said after this mare’s first run in Australia that he was quite encouraged considering she found some trouble at the top of the straight and went down by a neck. If she can run up to that standard here, she will be give Savatiano (#1) and Arcadia Queen (#2) backers plenty of headaches.
