Turnbull Stakes 2020 betting tips, odds & form

Master Of Wine
Master Of Wine is a big chance for the Hawkes stable in this weekend’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes.

Flemington plays host to just the one Group 1 race on Saturday in what will be the track’s last meeting before VRC Derby Day. Run over 2000m for $500,000 at set weights and penalties, this year’s Turnbull Stakes features a quality field of 15 runners including six Group 1 winners. Verry Elleegant will start favourite ahead of Surprise Baby and Master Of Wine, while Finche, Aktau and Django Freeman will be the main speed influences in a race that doesn’t have a great deal of pace engaged.

Saturday racing tips for 2020 Turnbull Stakes

Best BetMaster Of Wine Get the best odds

Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes’ Master Of Wine goes on top for us here after he bounced back well when fourth in the Makybe Diva Stakes behind Fierce Impact and Russian Camelot. The six-year-old gelding steps out over 2000m for the first time this prep after he went strength to strength during his last campaign, winning over this distance by four lengths, before running very well on his Group 1 debut in the Queen Elizabeth with 59kg. He gets down to 56.5kg under Michael Rodd and maps exceptionally from barrier four. Rodd had the ride last time out, which is a plus, and we expect the horse to be much fitter now third up. He can win this and stamp his name as one of the main Spring Carnival contenders.

Next BestSurprise Baby Get the best odds

Surprise Baby looks ready to go second up and should appreciate getting back to Flemington. In five runs at the track he has finished first, second, third, fourth and fifth, which suggests he never runs a bad race at HQ. He returned in great order in the Feehan Stakes behind Humidor, who franked that form when second to Russian Camelot in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes last weekend. While he might need a touch further than 2000m, he will get all the favours from barrier one and will be guided by his now regular rider, Craig Williams. The lightly raced son of Shocking sits on the second line of betting in both this and next month’s Melbourne Cup.

Best ValueHarlem Get the best odds

Harlem only has three Australian wins to his name and they all came over 2000m, with two of those coming at Group 1 level at this track and trip. He steps up to 2000m for the first time this prep and looks well suited at Flemington and third up, where he has won three times. The form out of his first two starts this campaign has been franked on numerous occasions, and he wasn’t been beaten all that far in either of those races. Jamie Mott should be positive from gate 11 and give the nine-year-old gelding every chance at a big price. It has been 18 months since his last win, and while we think he is past his best, a big run wont shock us.
