2020 Springtime Stakes betting preview

The Listed Springtime Stakes (aka The Amanda Elliott) is the second race on the card at Flemington for VRC Stakes Day. This year, the 1400m race for $175,000 has attracted a field of nine 3YO colts and geldings. The small field looks to be a classy one, and the Sydney-based Tommy Gold for John O’Shea has opened up a $ favourite. The Springtime Stakes will jump at 1pm AEDT.

#1 Pioneer River (4)

The Dabernig & Hayes colt looks to be one of the main on-pace gallopers in the Springtime Stakes after his dominant all-the-way victory at Cranbourne three weeks ago. In his juvenile campaign, he contested the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce but was eased down in the home straight after a torturous run. He had been building to the win at Cranbourne throughout his three-year-old season, including a third-place finish at The Valley the start prior. From barrier four, he should have no issue in settling in a forward position.

#2 Deep Speed (3)

It’s hard to ignore the impressive start to Deep Speed’s career after bolting home in his first two career starts. On debut, he was trapped three wide with no cover up on the speed and still managed to find enough in the home straight to win in style. He then backed that up with an all-the-way win at The Valley last Friday night to show he means business going into the back end of the Spring Carnival. He looks set to dictate terms from barrier three and will take some beating.

#3 Rock The Ring (1)

The second of the Dabernig & Hayes runners looks to be a touch outclassed in this after a poor showing in the Red Anchor Stakes at The Valley on Cox Plate Day. He chased home some handy three-year-olds in that race and won’t get it any easier here. He produced two wins in his juvenile campaign, but that was on the country circuit in Victoria. He has yet to fire a shot in his two runs in metropolitan races.

#4 Tommy Gold (5)

The early market favourite in the 2020 Springtime Stakes chased home what looks to be a boom horse in The Bopper first up at Randwick in the Brian Crowley Stakes. He produced the best last 800m of the race and hit the line nicely, accounting for the remainder of the field quite easily. He maps to give the leaders a bit of a head start entering the home straight, but he will be fighting out the finish if he runs up to form.

#5 Ronniejay (2)

Richard Laming and Craig Williams team up with a gelding who has made his name with tough, front-running performances on the country circuit. He’s got the job done by small margins at Murtoa and then again at Benalla a fortnight ago, just getting up on the line after settling outside the leader. He’ll be up on speed with the likes of Deep Speed, but this does look to be a step too far at this stage of his career.

#6 Far Enough (9)

Dale Short’s gelding debuted in fine style hen building through the gears nicely at Bendigo a month ago. He then stepped out in a competitive BM64 for his age group but was a significant drifter in the betting prior to the jump. He gets 5kg off his back from his last start and looks to be one of the better value plays in the Springtime Stakes.

#7 Torbreck (7)

The third and final Dabernig & Hayes runner will be looking to bounce back after a below-average performance in the Listed Gothic Stakes three weeks ago at Caulfield. He does possess a bit of early speed from the barriers and will be looking to get across from gate seven, but he maps to be outside the leader and could be caught three wide with no cover. He weakened out over the last 200m at Caulfield and will need to improve dramatically to figure here.

#8 Shelby Cobra (8)

Mike Moroney and Ben Melham team up with an impressive last-start winner from the opener on Sale Cup Day. He was sent around an odds-on favourite and got the job done as easy as you like. He settled just off the leader in the running but then took over early in the home straight and put a massive gap on his rivals, going on to win by three-and-a-half lengths. He drops 2kg off that effort and gets back to a firmer track, and he should be there in the finish.

#9 Allibor (6)

Simon Wilde’s gelding has finished second in both career starts – first at Donald, then at Bendigo – and has shown plenty to suggest he can take out a race like this. In his last start, he looked to have got to the front a fraction early and was vulnerable late when going down a nose. Considering he goes down a kilogram off that effort and remains at 1400m, he must be included in exotics.
