2020 VRC Oaks betting preview

The Group 1 VRC Kennedy Oaks will be run and won for another year this Thursday at Flemington. Run over 2500m for three-year-old fillies, the classic race has draw a field of 14. Dual Group 1 winner filly Montefilia will start as the odds-on favourite ahead of two-time Group 1 placegetter Personal. Miravalle is the only other runner in single figures. There doesn’t look to be too much speed, so it will come down to who is the better staying filly with the quickest turn of foot. Star Of Eden and Vilanculos look to be the two who will go forward.

1 – Montefilia

After great wins in the Flight Stakes and Spring Champion Stakes, the favourite looks very well placed to take out a third Group 1. Hugh Bowman partnered this girl in her first Group 1 win and re-unites with her here, which will be beneficial. She’s drawn ideally in barrier five to settle in the first half and finish over the top of them. She’s odds-on for a reason.

2 – Personal

This girl is so consistent but is getting scared of the winning post, having run second on four occasions. She looked home on Saturday in the Wakeful Stakes but was nabbed late by Victoria Quay. She is by a Galileo mare, so she is bred to stay and has most of these covered. Her class could get her home.

3 – Café Rizu

This horse could be the blowout here. She was a bit of a hidden gem in the Ethereal Stakes despite running seventh. She was luckless on that day and is going to need a decent dose of good fortune from the outside alley. Without too much speed in the race, she might look to settle a bit closer this time. She’s out of a Zabeel mare, so she has strong staying pedigree. She’s not the worst at $34.

4 – Succeed Indeed

We’ve had a fair opinion of this filly, but she’s let us down the last few and it might be time to give her up. She’s drawn wide and will settle near last, and she simply didn’t show enough of her turn of foot over 2000m in the Wakeful. She isn’t without a chance, but she’s not for us.

5 – Salto Angel

Very similar to Succeed Indeed is Danny O’Brien’s Sacred Falls filly, Salto Angel. She looked primed for an Oaks berth when she ran three consecutive seconds earlier in her preparation, but she wasn’t able to match motors with some of her rivals on Saturday. Not for us.

6 – Miravalle

She was arguably the run of the race in the Wakeful but wasn’t given much of a chance after settling a mile back off a slow tempo. She brings Sydney form and can be tied in around Montefilia, so she has to be a chance. The 2500m should suit her down to the ground, and she is drawn to get a cozy run midfield. She’s a big chance off her Wakeful run.

7 – Tyche Goddess

This horse had every chance in the Wakeful when she hit the front at the 400m, but she was swamped late and only managed third. On debut, she beat Let’s Karaka Deel, who has since run very well in the Derby. That is good form for this, but we aren’t convinced by her.

8 – Biarchi

This South Australian filly comes over off two consecutive wins at Murray Bridge and Morphettville. John Allen will utilise barrier one to put her in the box seat, but we don’t think she has much of a chance given her differing and arguably weaker form lines.

9 – Star Of Eden

This filly ran third in the Ethereal Stakes after running second in the Oaks Trial in September. She’ll be up on the speed form barrier two under Billy Egan, but we couldn’t possibly have her.

10 – Art Glass

Graham Begg’s Art Glass comes out of some relatively decent races, but she just hasn’t been going well enough. She’s no hope.

11 – Vilanulos

This one ran third in the Geelong Classic but is still a maiden. She did chase pretty hard in that race and should appreciate the 2500m, while she is in the right stable. Jamie Kah retains the ride and should give her every chance.

12 – Hard Squeeze

Hard Squeeze comes off a win at Echuca last start but isn’t up to this level yet. She was outclassed in the Oaks Trial six weeks ago and is unlikely to figure here.

13 – Yatton

This filly ran fourth in the Oaks Trial and was only beaten 1.5L, but she hasn’t been going well enough. Melbourne Cup winner Jye McNeil keeps the sit here after riding her in her last two, but she doesn’t appear good enough.

14 – Swindon Lass

She hasn’t run a place in four career starts and hasn’t even been close. This looks too hard.
