The Follow Files: Don’t ditch Anamoe or Tyzone just yet

HorseBetting blackbook tips

Group racing returned to Sydney on Saturday, January 29, which meant a couple of the nation’s top horses resumed as well. Although it was a tough weekend to find winners, the way the Rosehill track played allowed us to hone in on a couple of horses who made up ground out wide, with those gallopers likely to prove hard to beat next time out on a fairer surface.

Rosehill Gardens | Track: Good 4 | Rail: +6m Entire Course

Race 7: Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) | Time: 1:08.96

  • Horse to follow: ANAMOE (3rd)

With horses who found the fence at Rosehill on Saturday at a massive advantage, it gave star three-year-old colt ANAMOE practically no hope in running down Overpass in the Group 2 event. Having won the Caulfield Guineas in the spring before going on to run second in the Cox Plate, James Cummings’ highly prized runner may have resumed just a little bit dour to be effective over 1200m first-up, but to make ground out wide the way he did and go down by only a length suggested he has come back in terrific order. With the Apollo Stakes his likely next start on February 12 at Randwick, we can be confident that the dual Group 1 winner will bounce back from his one-length defeat on Saturday.

When to bet: There is no denying that this colt is a star, so we won’t be jumping off him next time we see him. That is likely to be the Apollo Stakes, before he tackles his own age in the Randwick Guineas. Follow, follow, follow!

Moonee Valley | Track: Soft 6 | Rail: True

Race 7: Listed Australia Stakes (1200m) | Time: 1:11.42

  • Horse to follow: SINAWANN (2ND)

In Saturday’s Moonee Valley feature, Anthony & Sam Freedman’s imported galloper SINAWANN caught the eye, chasing hard into second behind undefeated mare Marabi. While the five-year-old entire was no match for the eventual winner, nobody expected him to be, so anything he did well was an added bonus. The son of Kingman was a Group 3 winner at Caulfield in just his second Australian start back in November, so a fast-run 1200m race around The Valley was always going to be too much for him first-up. He charged home late to get within three lengths of the Oakleigh Plate favourite, which suggests to us that he can be followed closely this Melbourne Autumn Carnival.

When to bet: Sinawann is currently the joint $4 favourite with I’m Thunderstruck in the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield on February 12, where we expect him to be very hard to beat with that added fitness on his side. While we are almost certain that I’m Thunderstruck is the superior galloper, Sinawann may have the fitness edge to beat him in the Orr before they likely meet again a fortnight later in the Futurity Stakes.

Sunshine Coast | Track: Soft 7 | Rail: True

Race 4: 3YO Handicap (1000m) | Time: 57.98s

  • Horse to follow: LEGAL ESPRIT (2ND)

On a day where most horses found it extremely tough to make ground along the inside running rail at the Sunshine Coast, LEGAL ESPRIT almost pulled it off in race four. After winning three straight races last campaign, the three-year-old almost extended the streak to four, going down in a narrow photo finish. Early on in the race, the son of Bel Esprit could barely keep up with the seven-horse field, trailing the second-last horse by about a length before Kyle Wilson-Taylor saved ground along the running rails. He looked to hit a flat spot at the 100m mark before charging again late inside the final 50m. Startantes was the only other horse to make any decent ground along the fence, and she is a Group 1-placed filly.

When to bet: Legal Esprit is likely to pop up in a very similar race next time we see him, so we expect him to take plenty of benefit out of Saturday’s first-up assignment and be close to winning wherever he goes over 1000m.

Race 8: Listed Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) | Time: 1:24.00

  • Horse to follow: TYZONE (9th)

TYZONE was the sole Group 1 winner in Saturday’s feature at the Sunshine Coast, but considering he hasn’t won since his victory in the 2020 Stradbroke Handicap, he was sent out as an $81 outsider. After running 11th of 13 in his first-up assignment over an unsuitable 900m trip at the Gold Coast, the eight-year-old gelding didn’t have much luck on Saturday, crossing the line practically unasked. Ridden by Noel Callow, Tyzone settled down third last on the fence before seemingly travelling well into the corner and then running up the backside of tiring horses. That move stopped all of his momentum and Callow ultimately eased him down, with the $1.2 million earner pulling through the line in what was a bit of a hidden gem type of run.

When to bet: It has been a long time between drinks for this old-timer, and he is poorly handicapped now in these type of races, so he may struggle to win in the very near future, but he is going well enough to run into the minor money at big odds. He probably needed the run again on Saturday, so third or fourth up into a race like The Archer – where he will get in with 59kg under weight-for-age conditions – will suit.
