The Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap over a mile and a half is one of the feature races on Saturday at Randwick, and this year’s running has brought together the best stayers NSW has to offer. Newcastle Cup winner Mugatoo has come up a $3.10 favourite, with the Chris Waller-trained duo Shared Ambition and Brimham Rocks the only other two in single figures in an open market. The last of three Group 1s on the card is set to jump at 4:45pm AEST.

Shared Ambition returned to form in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes a fortnight ago when finishing second. He maps to be at the rear of the field from barrier 19 and will give the leaders a fair head start coming into the straight. He gets in well at the weights with a 3.5kg advantage over the favourite, and that may prove beneficial over the concluding stages as he looks to charge down the outside. With James McDonald on board, this is a good chance for Shared Ambition to get his Cups campaign going.
There is nothing against Mugatoo, who gave Kris Lees his first Newcastle Gold Cup a fortnight ago with an impressive run on resumption. The $3.30 seems a little short, hence the slight leaning to Shared Ambition, but he maps to be two pairs in front of the Waller runner. After gaining barrier seven, Kerrin McEvoy should get into a nice position early and give him every chance to fight out the finish.
The 2020 Metropolitan looks to be a race for the backmarkers to play their part. If Shared Ambition and Mugatoo are to fight out the finish, then perhaps the Maher & Eustace-trained Lord Belvedere can continue his good form after accounting for the in-form Persan and Melbourne Cup hopeful Schabau. If he can run up to that standard this weekend, he will be right in the finish with the more favoured runners. This looks a great each-way play.
