Rudy to chase big bonus

Gold Coast trainer Helen Page’s decision to keep Rudy away from the Sydney and Melbourne spring carnivals could reap a $100,000 bonus.

Rudy, the winner of the 2014 Villiers Stakes, will run in a barrier trial on Tuesday with a view to a second win in Sydney’s Group Two summer showpiece.

If he can win the 1600m-race again on December 17, he will be in line for the bonus put up by Racing Queensland for any horse that can win the Villiers and the Listed Bernborough Stakes on December 31.

Page believes the bonus will be a great boost to the Queensland race which is the last leg of the Brisbane summer treble – George Moore Stakes, Lough Neagh Stakes and Bernborough Stakes.

“We had the two races picked out for Rudy already but the bonus announcement was extra good news. It is good to see open company milers being rewarded,” Page said.

“Rudy has a very good record at 1600 metres and they look ideal races for him.”

She said Rudy would trial at the Gold Coast on Tuesday and she would then map out an firm campaign.

“He appears to have come back well but we will have a better idea after the trial,” she said.

Rudy hasn’t run since finishing 10th in the Brisbane Cup over 2400m when he was forced into the leader’s role.

He has four wins at 1600m and a fourth in the 2015 Dincaster Mile and has been a great money spinner for his owners, Chinchilla’s Clarke brothers – Tom, Donald and David – having won $729,850.

“He hasn’t had a lot of luck in some races but he is always honest and that is all you can ask,” Page said.
