Punt Drunk: Laming all smiles after RV drops charges

Cheshire Cat

Punt Drunk Daily – 26/2/21

TGIF! And if you backed Scream Dream in the last at Pakenham last night, call in sick and curl up in a ball.

The racing industry lost an icon yesterday with the passing of Jim Johnson. He won 31 Group 1 races, including three Melbourne Cups, two Cox Plates and a Caulfield Cup. We pass on our thoughts.

All charges against Laming dropped

Something does not seem right with Racing Victoria’s decision to drop all charges against trainer Richard Laming. A sitting of the Victorian Racing Tribunal was held yesterday morning, and it went as long as the Oakleigh Plate did. It was quick, pain free and almost like RV was just ripping off a band-aid. Laming left the hearing grinning like the Cheshire Cat, and who can blame him?

What’s up, Doc?

Hey Doc is a genuine champion for the McEvoy stable. He owes them nothing and could spring a surprise at some stage during the Autumn Carnival. Just do not expect the champ to be winning down the Flemington straight first up. Calvin McEvoy has come out and let the punters know that Hey Doc could be vulnerable this weekend. Having only had one trial and taking a bit these days to get going in a campaign, the seven-year-old gelding is expected to go around in the Bob Hoysted Handicap as if it’s a paid practice run. It’s what you love to see from a trainer, though, because how many punters would see Hey Doc in and think $20 is massive overs for the four-time Group 1 winner?

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

The resuming Najmah is unbeaten from two runs in the spring, including a win over the 1100m at Canterbury before heading to the paddock. From barrier one, expect Tommy Berry to settle the Snitzel filly towards the lead, as both wins came from front-running displays. Having won by a combined six lengths in both starts, she looks hard to catch.
