Moonee Valley betting preview – February 26, 2021
The night racing season continues at Moonee Valley on Friday as the track hosts an eight-race card from 6:30pm AEDT onwards. With clear skies forecasted and the rail out 6m the entire circuit, we should see a good night of racing. The track is rated a Good 4, but we should see an upgrade to a Good 3 at some point in the card.
Best Bet: Cassius
On the back of an impressive victory over this track and distance on February 5, Cassius from the Dabernig & Hayes stable looks to be a clear best bet on the Moonee Valley card. Having missed the placings once in six starts at The Valley, the four-year-old gelding eats up the track and will look to string together consecutive victories for the first time in his career. From barrier three he maps to settle midfield under Thomas Stockdale, who retains the ride, and the pair look hard to hold out in similar conditions to what they faced three weeks ago. Cassius sustained a long run from the second half of the field on that occasion, but he looks to get it a touch easier here on Friday night.

Next Best: Second Slip
Since moving from New Zealand to join the Will Clarken stable, Second Slip has been nothing but impressive in both of his victories on Australian soil. He is a natural on-pace runner, so expect him to roll forward and take up the running from barrier four under Jamie Kah. With speed drawn to his outside, he should kick up and take the rail away from those early-speed gallopers. He comes off a four-week freshen up from his win at Sandown and will appreciate the firm track, as he has three wins from five starts on Good-rated surfaces. Second Slip will look to make it a genuine 1200m and should be hard to beat with Kah onboard.

Best Value: Ice Ice Baby
We were with the Wendy Kelly-trained Ice Ice Baby for his first-up run over the 955m here on February 5 when he could not get the job done as a drifting favourite. He steps up to the 1200m for the first time this campaign and looks a nice price considering he won over this track and distance back on October 2. Expect Jamie Kah to have him just off the leaders’ heels from barrier two, and if the gap comes in the home straight, he should prove hard to hold out in the concluding stages.
