The 21st running of the Listed Murray Bridge Cup is the feature event on a nine-race card at Murray Bridge on Friday afternoon. A field of 18 had accepted before the scratchings of Balf’s Choice and Peloton, leaving us with 16 to compete for $100,000 in prize money. The 2018 winner of the Murray Bridge Cup, Von Costa Glass, is the only former champion in the field. The 1600m race is set to jump at 4:25pm local time.
We have been with Michael Hickmott’s former Kiwi galloper in each of his three starts in his first campaign in Australia. He makes his own luck up on speed, and from barrier four the in-form Jessica Eaton shouldn’t have any issue getting across to the rails. The only concern is that Aqueduct is a maiden over 1600m. However, with the blinkers coming off for the first time, he should prove hard to catch as he looks to make it four from four in this stint.
Jeff Searle and Jake Toeroek will look to turn the tables on the favourite after an impressive runner-up performance behind Aqueduct a fortnight ago at Morphettville. The 4YO mare never really looked like defeating her rival but was taking ground off him throughout the home straight. She looks to be screaming out for the 1600m and will be fighting out the finish if the favourite has a tough time of it up front.
This 5YO gelding may be the second elect in terms of Tony McEvoy’s chances in the Murray Bridge Cup, but his best is good enough to see him fighting out the finish. He was a one-time favourite to take out the Balaklava Cup last month but seemingly got too far back in the run to provide any threat to the eventual winner. Once he balanced up, he ran home nicely but just had too much to do. From barrier six he should be a bit closer in the run this time around.
