What Gunnedah Cup Day
Where Gunnedah Jockey Club – 1 Wilkinson Rd, Gunnedah NSW 2380
When Sunday, May 26, 2024
First Race 12:25pm AEST

The Gunnedah Cup (1600m) headlines a competitive eight-race card in NSW’s North West Slopes region on Sunday afternoon. The rail is out +3m between the 1000m and 400m markers, while the remainder sits in the true position. There is no rain forecast across the weekend, so it should be a genuine Good 4 surface prior to the opening event at 12:25pm AEST.

Gunnedah Cup Tip: Akasawa

Akasawa was sensational when returning in the Tamworth Cup (1400m) on April 26. The son of Real Impact was savaging the line behind Gringotts, and although he was no match for the winner, he clearly finished off best of the rest. The only query is the 65.5kg on his back, but with the class he brings to the Gunnedah Cup, Akasawa must be considered the one to beat.

Best Bet at Gunnedah: Zampano

Zampano dispatched his rivals with relative ease on debut at Tamworth on April 26 and looks primed for back-to-back wins. The gelding by Tassort proved far too classy for maiden company first-up, kicking clear to score by 1.5 lengths with plenty in hand. The Melissa Dennett-trained galloper could have above-average ability, and if he can get the job done in this two-year-old showcase, Zampano could press on to tougher assignments in the future.

Next Best at Gunnedah: Nyali Sands

Nyali Sands has proved ultra-consistent in her four-start career, only missing the frame once. She powered through the wire in her most recent outing at Tamworth on May 10, with the daughter of Casino Prince getting within a length of Tornado Express. Ben Looker takes the reins again, and provided he can find a mid-field sit with cover throughout the 1250m journey, Nyali Sands will be hard to hold out in this BM58 affair.
