Group Three Betting Guide
Date: Saturday, January 31, 2026
Location: Caulfield Racecourse – Melbourne, Victoria
Prize Money: $200,000
Distance: 1200m

The Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes, a Group 3 race for mares aged four and up, is conducted by the Melbourne Racing Club.

The race covers 1200m under set weights and penalties conditions. In 2025, it offers $200,000 in prize money.

Initially known as the Hyderabad Race Club Plate, it was changed from Listed to Group 3 status in 2007, and renamed in 2012.

Silent Sedition’s narrow defeat in 2017 preceded an outstanding campaign, featuring wins and close finishes in several top-tier races, including a Group 1 victory in the William Reid Stakes.

Probabeel used her 2021 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes win as a springboard to the Futurity Stakes and claimed back-to-back victories in 2021 and 2022.

Notable winners of this race include Skewiff (2003), Glamour Puss (2005), Coniston Gem (2007), Velocitea (2010), Beaded (2011), Tycoon Tara (2015), Prussian Vixen (2017/2018), and dual winner Probabeel.

The 2024 edition of the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes saw Vagrant triumph over Penthouse and Party For One.

Recent runnings of the Geoffrey Belmaine Stakes:

  • Charlotte Littlefield and Mark Zahra combined with the talented She’s Bulletproof to take out the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes at Sandown, as the four-year-old mare stormed clear in the final 300m to record a dominant 2.75-length win. The daughter of Shooting To Win was well-backed throughout betting, fighting for favouritism with Miraval Rose ($4.20) with Picklebet, eventually jumping as the $4.00 market elect. Zahra chose to ride the eventual winner as the best horse in the race, settling outside the leaders, Fancify ($7.00) and Wrote To Arataki ($19.00), but three-wide without cover for the entire 1200m trip. With her main market rival, Miraval Rose, settled behind the leaders and slightly held up turning for home, Zahra pushed the button, and She’s Bulletproof took over with 300m to go. Nothing made up significant ground from back in the field, and She’s Bulletproof continued to pull away from the rest of the field while Fancify and Wrote To Arataki boxed on gamely to fill the placings.
  • Mitchell Freedman and Beau Mertens combined with classy mare Vagrant ($6.00), who flew home from the back of the field to claim the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes. After jumping a little slow from barrier two, Mertens allowed the daughter of Pariah to settle and get into a rhythm three back on the rail, while Penthouse ($5.50) set a solid tempo out in front. As the field rounded the home turn, it appeared as though Jordan Childs had pinched a winning gap on Penthouse as the rest of her rivals started to struggle but Mertens was picking them off along the rail and making solid ground. Once Vagrant was given full bore and got clear, she finished off with a blistering turn of foot and put the race to bed within a few strides and defeated Penthouse and Party For One ($9.00) to claim a valuable black type victory for her connections.
  • Jamie Kah and Matthew Williams combined with Wrote To Arataki in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes at Sandown, as the four-year-old mare led every step of the 1300m. As the day went on Wrote To Arataki shortened as each race went by, jumping as a $3.10 favourite with online bookmakers, as the punters were quick to work out that the soft Sandown Hillside track was favouring leaders and on-speed runners. This daughter of Wrote has now recorded back-to-back wins in town and her first black type victory, after Kah piloted her to success at Flemington in a Benchmark 70 Handicap on New Year’s Day. Wrote To Arataki has gone from winning her maiden at Warrnambool to winning a Group 3 at Sandown, all within the last 12 months.
  • Star New Zealand mare Probabeel snatched her second consecutive win in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. The champion five-year-old was sent out as a $1.75 favourite in the final race of the day, and although she got the job done for punters, it was far from an easy watch. Trained by Jamie Richards, the daughter of Savabeel was having her first run for the autumn, before she looks to make it back-to-back Futurity Stakes (1400m) in a fortnight. In just a seven-horse field, jockey Brett Prebble settled the $4 million earner in the second half of the field, before producing her to the extreme outside at the top of the straight. Mariamia gave a strong kick at the furlong to give her chasers a mammoth task, but such is Probabeel’s fighting qualities, she knuckled down and got her head in front right where it counts – the winning post.
  • Probabeel is on target to fly the Kiwi flag in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and the $5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) after proving a class above her rivals in the 2021 Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. The multiple Group One winner carried 60kgs in the mares race and travelled wide throughout from the outside barrier before forging clear in the straight under jockey Damian Lane.
