2020 Eclipse Stakes racing preview
The 1800m Group 3 Eclipse Stakes is the penultimate race at Sandown on Saturday. The field of 12 is littered with Group performers and plenty of consistent metro types, with Homesman set to jump as favourite from Gold Fields and All Too Huiying.
Next in the Eclipse Stakes betting is West Wind, who is arguably one of the in-form gallopers in the state after stringing together a hat-trick of wins. She was a dominant winner three weeks ago on Manikato Stakes Night, and the form out of that race has been franked with two of her rivals going on to win at their next start. She has the early speed to get across from barrier eight and dictate terms out in front, but with speed drawn to her outside, she may be forced to take a sit off the pace. If she does get to the front without using up too much energy, she should have enough of a kick at the top of the straight and lead them home.
It’s hard to ignore the form of All Too Huiying, especially his last-start win in the Sale Cup when kicking clear early in the home straight to get up by five lengths. Prior to that, he was too strong in a driving finish in the Listed Seymour Cup. If he brings his country form to the city, he could be hard to hold out if he can get a bit of luck early on from barrier nine.
For Pappalino, this is a throw at the stumps. The recent import bolted in his last start in France and has placed at Group 3 level in the past. He gets the in-form Damian Lane aboard for his first start in Australia. If he can acclimatise to his new surroundings and bring some of his European form first up, he might be a genuine hope at big odds.
