The final Group 1 of the Sydney Autumn Carnival for 2022 is the $600,000 All Aged Stakes, which has attracted a capacity field of 14 with three emergencies. A number of differing formlines come together for the 1400m feature, with most horses coming from either the Doncaster Mile, All-Star Mile or TJ Smith Stakes.

It is a competitive betting race, with Forbidden Love ($5), In The Congo ($5) and Mo’unga ($5.50) essentially sharing the top line. Tofane is an $11 chance in her swansong, while Cascadian ($13), Nimalee ($13) and Ellsberg ($15) sit on the next three lines of betting.

Ellsberg is the likely leader in the race along with three-year-old colt In The Congo, while Shout The Bar ($21) will ensure it is a genuinely run race. Forbidden Love and Tofane will find a prominent role, while Mo’unga is likely to get back and be flying late.

The winner of the 2021 Stradbroke Handicap and 2022 All Aged Stakes lines up in what will be her final race start, so we are going to side with Tofane in this. The Michael Moroney-trained mare grows a leg when she races in the clockwise direction, while 1400m weight-for-age races are right in her wheelhouse. Having won the CF Orr Stakes first-up at Caulfield, she hasn’t been too bad since then in the Futurity Stakes and All Star Mile. Now back to 1400m off a freshen up, we are happy to be with the mare by Ocean Park in her last race start. Mark Zahra knows her well, and she has won this race before.

Mo’unga has clearly been set for this race by Annabel Neasham, given he bypassed the All Star Mile, George Ryder Stakes and Doncaster Mile after running extremely well in the Futurity over 1400m at Caulfield in late February. The son of Savabeel is just a good, honest racehorse with a great will to win, so it is hard to go against him in these big races. From barrier nine, Tommy Berry will ride the four-year-old quietly before allowing him to finish the race of strongly.

You have to have plenty of respect for Forbidden Love, who gets back to 1400m after running fourth in the Doncaster last time out. Prior to that, the Michael Freedman-trained mare won back-to-back Group 1 races on heavy tracks, which saw her start a solid favourite in the Donnie a fortnight ago. She just appeared to plod in the concluding stages of the mile, so the return to 1400m is going to suit her down to the ground. Hugh Bowman will need to ride her perfectly from the outside alley though.
