Xtravagant to stand at Newhaven Park
New Zealand star Xtravagant has been retired and will stand at Newhaven Park Stud in NSW in the spring.
A champion three-year-old, Xtravagant failed to reproduce his winning form in two trips to Australia and his latest New Zealand campaign was aborted.
An eight-length winner at his only start at two and a dual Group One winner at three, Xtravagant won the New Zealand 2000 Guineas by 8-1/2 lengths and beat older horses in the Waikato Sprint by another eight-length margin.
“He was a breathtaking racehorse with phenomenal speed. His eight-length win as a two-year-old was incredible, then his record victories in the Guineas and the Waikato Sprint against older horses were unbelievable,” Newhaven’s John Kelly said.
“He is a superb looking individual with a truly international pedigree that is an outcross for Australia’s Danehill line mares.”
Xtravagant will stand for $15,000 plus GST.
He is by Pentire, the sire of 2015 Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance out of Zabeel mare Axiom making him a full brother to multiple Group winner He’s Remarkable.
Xtravagant was raced by Te Akau Racing headed by David Ellis.
“He is a wonderful example of equine excellence, has a wonderful temperament and I will be sending mares of my own to Australia to mate with him,” Ellis said.
