The only thing certain at the finish of Sunday’s Affco NZ Ltd Wairoa Cup (2100m) was that trainers Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen had provided the quinella.

Topweight and race favourite Wait A Sec had been expected to prevail for the Hastings based duo as he concluded his Auckland Cup preparation with the Wairoa contest. Nobody told stablemate Saint Kitt however, as he bolted to the front approaching the home bend and set sail for the winning post.

Johnathan Parkes and Wait A Sec had weaved their way through the field at that stage and were in hot pursuit of the tearaway leader. Halfway down the straight their task looked too tough under the 61kg impost they were carrying as Saint Kitt showed no signs of stopping.

Slowly but surely Wait A Sec closed on his companion and as they hit the finishing line he stuck his nose out and snatched the victory from a gallant runner-up who fought all the way to the post.

It was Wait A Sec’s 13th career victory with eight of those wins coming from his last 12 starts including the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) in October last year.

Wait A Sec will now line-up in the Gr.1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m) on 9 March where he is listed as a $12 chance on the TAB Fixed Odds market. – NZ Racing Desk
