Tourneur wins with only ride on Oaks day

After planning to ride at Gawler, South Australian jockey Dom Tourneur has landed a winner at Flemington on VRC Oaks day.

Tourneur had been booked to ride at Gawler on Thursday but was able to change plans when the opportunity came up to ride the Mick Price-trained The Chairman in the $100,000 Twitter Trophy (1800m).

“I’ve won on him before at Morphettville (last year) and because I knew the horse they wanted me to continue my association,” Tourneur said.

The Chairman was having his fourth start after a year off the scene and was coming off a last-start Bendigo win when he was ridden by Michael Dee.

From barrier one, Tourneur had The Chairman three pairs back on the fence before being able to angle into the clear at the top of the straight.

The Chairman ($7) chased down Cool Chap to win by a half length with two lengths to Scherzoso third.

Price said Tourneur, who has won a Group One at Flemington on Hucklebuck two years ago, was underrated.

“”He’d make it over here if he settled here,” Price said.

Price said The Chairman had been a different horse since being gelded and expects he can continue to rise through the grades now.

“He had a bad foot abscess there for a while and we missed part of the winter with him which is fine,” Price said.

“But now you’ll see him go through his grades. You’ll see a nice horse and he might end up winning a nice race over 2000 metres one day.”
