Jumps jockey Tom Ryan has been suspended for failing to ride his mount out to the finish in the Australian Hurdle at Sandown.

Ryan rode Dane Hussler, who dead-heated for fourth with Ancient King, in Saturday’s feature jumps race with the pair beaten a half-head for third prize by Honey Steel’s Gold.

Ryan was suspended for eight jumps and highweight races.

His ban starts immediately and he can return on June 11.

Acting chief steward Rob Montgomery told Ryan the panel felt he had not ridden Dane Hussler to the finish over the final four strides of the 3400m race.

“We’ve taken into account that you feel the horse may have felt a bit short after the race,” Montgomery said.

“But your actions in not riding out to the finish may have affected the result of the race and it was a feature race.”
