The United States wins the Ranvet Stakes

Kerrin McEvoy has produced a ground-saving ride on The United States to win the Group One Ranvet Stakes.

The United States was snookered on the inside in a worse than midfield position but McEvoy steered the import between horses to beat the favourite Hauraki in the weight-for-age race at Rosehill on Saturday.

Trained by Robert Hickmott for Lloyd Williams, The United States was backing up after finishing second in the Blamey Stakes at Flemington last week.

“I thought to myself I have to cut the corner because I have a better turn of foot than these,” McEvoy said.

“That’s what he showed and he quickened up through a gap and I was in front within a hundred yards.”

Hauraki had his chance to peg back the winner while Criterion ran a much improved race to finish in the minor placing.
