The fifth and final Group 1 at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday gives the sprinters a chance in The Galaxy over 1100m. A capacity field of 14 (plus three emergencies) has been assembled for the $700,000 race, with Splintex ($41) allocated the top weight under handicap conditions.

Making the trip to Sydney from Brisbane is the race favourite, Isotope ($4), who is a dominant favourite ahead of Big Parade, Overpass, Brooklyn Hustle and Paulele all sharing the second line of betting at $11 with . It then goes out to In The Congo, Away Game and cult hero Shelby Sixtysix at $13 apiece, while Minhaaj has received some support, firming from $19 into $16.

There is speed drawn all over the park, with sprinters such as Big Parade, In The Congo, Overpass, Malkovich, Paulele and Rule Of Law all natural leaders, while Isotope, Away Game, Minhaaj and Belluci Babe won’t be too far away. It shapes as a fascinating race, with plenty of differing form lines coming into it, but we are siding with proven Group 1 sprinting form for our top selection.

If you think of some of the in-form horses this autumn, Forbidden Love is one of the first to come to mind. Defeating that horse was Overpass when resuming in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes at this track over 1200m. Running third that day was Anamoe, who came out to win the Hobartville Stakes before narrowly going down in the Randwick Guineas last time out. Overpass ran second to Lost And Running in his second run this preparation, before a trip to Flemington saw the colt bolt in to win the Inglis Sprint over 1200m. From barrier one, Tim Clark won’t have any work to do on the three-year-old son of Vancouver, which will allow him to save his petrol for the final 100m where the whips will be cracking. He’s fit and he is fast, so we want to be with him.

We love Isotope, but she may have her work cut out. Tony Gollan is a master trainer, so if his star mare is to take out The Galaxy, it will be very well deserved. After almost dying from a colic attack she suffered over the winter, Isotope made a huge statement in the Magic Millions Sprint (1200m) on January 15 on the Gold Coast, defeating Tycoonist and Away Game by 1.25 lengths on the back of one trial. The daughter of Deep Field now comes into The Galaxy first-up off a two-month break without a trial, so fitness could be a slight query, although she did jump out at Doomben last week. Kerrin McEvoy goes on for the first time, replacing regular rider Ryan Maloney, while she should be out of the early speed battle from barrier 10. She certainly is good enough to win this and she is a deserving favourite.

In The Congo resumes for the autumn in The Galaxy, and the race shapes to suit him. The big chestnut colt won the Golden Rose in the spring defeating Anamoe and Coastwatch, before going to Flemington for the Coolmore Stud Stakes and failing to beat a runner home. Since then, Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott have trialled him twice where he has looked impressive both times, setting him up nicely for this first-up assignment. Drawn to do no work under Tommy Berry from barrier two, In The Congo will be up rolling along on the speed at a track where he is already a Group 1 winner. The 1100m should suit this son of Snitzel, as will the rain-affected surface. If he’s fit enough – which he should be – he will take some catching.
