The Magic Millions raceday on the Gold Coast is quickly becoming one of the most popular racing carnivals in Australia with over $14 million in prizemoney on offer throughout the day.

The meeting became Australia’s first $10 million raceday in 2016, offering huge prizemoney on a nine race program with a staggering seven races worth $1 million or more. Now worth $14.25 million in prizemoney, which is paid from first to last position on all races. It is the feature race meeting of the Queensland Summer Racing Carnival.

The feature events of the day are the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, with the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas run alongside it.

The Magic Millions is owned by prominent Australian businessman Gerry Harvey and Katie Page after they purchased interests off the other partners in 2011. The Magic Millions Classic for the two-year-olds is just one of three races worth over $1 million for juveniles, with the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper the others.

Magic Millions Dates

The Magic Millions is held in January each year at the Gold Coast Turf Club. The 2024 meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January 13, 2024.

Magic Millions Venue

Gold Coast horse racing

The Gold Coast Turf Club in Bundall, Queensland has been the Magic Millions raceday venue since 1987 with the meeting restricted to horses sold at the Magic Millions Sales.

Magic Millions Sales

The Magic Millions Sales are held throughout the year, with multiple online auctions. However, the showcase auction is the Gold Coast Yearling Sale held in January on the Gold Coast alongside the Magic Millions Raceday.

During the 2021 Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast, there were 1230 horses that were auctioned off, over the seven day sales extravaganza.

The auctions are held at Magic Millions Sales Complex Bundall, just down the road from the Gold Coast Turf Club.

Graduates sold through Magic Millions are eligible to enter the national race series and qualify for the nine races on Magic Millions raceday, plus the addition of a possible four wildcard runners as part of Queensland’s Summer Racing Carnival.

Best horses sold at Magic Millions

Arguably Australia’s greatest mare, Winx was sold in the 2013 Magic Millions Yearling Sales, with the three-time Cox Plate champion selling for $230,000.

The two-time The Everest champion Redzel was sold 12 months later for $120,000 on his way to amassing career earnings of $7,797,750.

Despite being known for continually chasing home the legendary Black Caviar, Buffering is a legend in his own right, picking up 7 Group 1 wins in his illustrious career. The big Queenslander was sold for just $22,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Yearling Sales.

Other champions on the horse racing scene such as Pierro, Atlantic Jewel and Sebring have all been bought from the Magic Millions Sales.

Notable winners at the Magic Millions Raceday

Plenty of subsequent Group 1 winners have used the Magic Millions Raceday at the Gold Coast Turf Club as a launching pad to Group 1 racing success in their career.

On his way to winning a Golden Slipper, Capitalist took out the 2YO Classic back in 2016, whilst multiple Group 1 winner Sunlight took out the event two years later before going on to race in some of the best races this country has for sprinters.

Remarkably, Invincibella from the Chris Waller yard managed to win the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares contest over 1300m three years in a row in a stretch from 2018-2020.

It has not necessarily been all about the young guns at the Magic Millions, with the great Buffering claiming victory in the QTIS Open Handicap in 2016 as an eight-year-old in what turned out to be the last win in his illustrious career.
