The Magic Millions Cup, worth $1 million, is run over 1400m and is one of the feature events on the Magic Millions Race Day at the Gold Coast Turf Club held each year in the middle of January.

Horses tend to come into the Magic Millions Cup field via an earlier summer lead-up in Queensland including the Group 3 George Moore Stakes at Doomben in December.

The Magic Millions Cup is run at Restricted Listed level, with runners sold in the previous Magic Millions catalogue the only horses eligible to run in the event.

The first edition of the race was run in January 2003, with subsequent Group 1 winners like Spirit Of Boom, Lucky Hussler and Vega One among the names on the honour roll.

History & Statistics on the Magic Millions Cup

Since its inaugural running in 2003, only Eleven Eleven has managed to claim the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas 12 months prior, before coming out and winning the Magic Millions Cup the following year.

Clarry Conners, Gai Waterhouse, Tony Gollan and Chris Waller have all managed two wins in the Magic Millions Cup, but no trainer has ever managed to claim the race on three occasions.

Much like in the training ranks, no jockey has the won the race more than twice, with Craig Williams, Glen Boss and Bobby El-Issa the only hoops to have won the race more than once.

Considering the event is an open handicap, the race has been a punters favourite in recent years, with the average winning price since 2019 being $4.95. As always it pays to shop around for the best odds at Australian betting sites.

Previous Runnings of the Magic Millions Cup

  • Ciaron Maher and David Eustace broke their frustrating streak of near-misses on Magic Millions Raceday by claiming victory in Saturday’s Restricted Listed $1 million Jewel Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast with the improving mare Semana. Despite saddling up the third-placed Spywire and fourth-placed Erno’s Cube in the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic, as well as coming close with Zenzella in the Magic Millions Subzero and Froebel Star in the Magic Millions Debut Fillies earlier in the day, it was Semana, a daughter of Winning Rupert, that brought smiles with a dominant two-length win over Meridius and Revolutionary Miss.
  • Trainer Tony Gollan ended Magic Millions Day in style, taking home two of the major features, as Vinco (+2000) caused an upset in the finale to win the Magic Millions Cup. After moving to the final race of the card with the re-arranged schedule due to Saturday’s postponement, the $1,000,000 Magic Millions Cup was a great way to end festivities as those that backed the outsider were rewarded with a big price with online bookmakers. Self-appointed ‘adopted Queenslander’ Ben Thompson produced an outstanding ride on the six-year-old gelding, although it wasn’t all smooth sailing if you backed Vinco. Oscar Zulu (+260) and Holyfield (+600) filled the placings, finishing a length off the winner.
  • Despite a third of a length separating the first four across the line, the Gregory Hickman-trained Eleven Eleven managed to take out a second straight Magic Millions Cup. The five-year-old gelding had to weave his through traffic under the urgings of Hugh Bowman and once clear exploded late inside the final 200m and managed to pip the likes of Holyfield and subsequent Group 1 winner Apache Chase int he shadows of the winning post. His win saw him become the first horse in Magic Millions Cup history to defend his crown.
  • History was made in 2021 when the 2020 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas winner Eleven Eleven returned 12 months later to claim Magic Millions Cup glory. Under a near perfect steer from Nash Rawiller, the Gregory Hickman-trained son of Fastnet Rock was given a rails hugging ride throughout. Considering the ever changing track conditions due to rain, the leaders opted to head to the centre of the track in a bid to gain an advantage. However, Rawiller used his smarts, took Eleven Eleven to the inside portion of the track and was in clear air throughout. He skipped clear inside the final 200m and had enough left in the tank to hold off the fast finishing Soxagon on the line.
  • Having won The Gateway at his last start, the Tony Gollan-trained Vega One could not be stopped on his way to claiming the Magic Millions Cup. Having been given a peach of a steer from Michael Rodd, the son of Lope de Vega showed his class when claiming the $1m event. Having loomed up at the 200m mark, Vega One was quick to put a gap on his rivals and was eventually eased down inside the final 50m in what was an each watch for the punters who took the $3.60 available for him.
  • Following a win in the Magic Millions Snippets earlier in the day, Bjorn Baker added the Magic Millions Cup to his trophy cabinet following Redouble’s win in the 1400m affair. Craig Williams had the son of Redoute’s Choice in a perfect spot along the rails and when he edged clear, he was always going to take some beating. Redouble ambled up to the leaders inside the final furlong and had enough left in reserve to hold off the fast finishing Sambro.
  • The Matthew Dunn-trained Care To Think entered the 2018 Magic Millions Cup with four successive wins under his belt and added a fifth straight win in a breathtaking way. The son of So You Think had to endure a tricky run in transit when travelling three wide, but under a timely steer from Jeff Lloyd he never really looked like getting beaten. Having hit the front inside the final 100m, Care To Think managed to pull away from his rivals on the line. He was purchased in 2015 for $16,000 and following his win in the Magic Millions Cup took his career earning to over $860,000.
