Schofield suspended, fined $2k over whip

Hong Kong-based Chad Schofield has become the latest jockey suspended and fined for over use of the whip during the Sydney autumn carnival.

Schofield will miss one Hong Kong meeting to go with a $2000 fine after he pleaded guilty to using twice as many hits than allowed before the 100m in a race at Randwick last Saturday.

Racing NSW stewards held an inquiry via teleconference on Thursday after they found Schofield struck Brook Road 10 times before the 100m in the Group Two Sapphire Stakes.

Although he rides mostly in Hong Kong, it was Schofield’s fifth offence under Australia’s controversial new whip rules during the past 12 months.

Schofield’s penalty co-incides with a crackdown on whip rule breaches.

Stewards fined three jockeys for offences on the final day of The Championships on Saturday.

They claimed another scalp on Wednesday when Blake Shinn was fined $1000 for hitting Zanbagh six times before the 100m in the Group One Queen of the Turf Stakes.
