Perpetual Crisis caused a big boilover when winning the $250,000 Inglis Dash at Flemington for Darren Weir

A $20,000 sales purchase at the Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale has netted a big team of owners the $250,000 Inglis Dash at Flemington on Saturday.

The three-year-old by Stryker finished fifth in a moderate field at Sandown last start and bookmakers were giving it no chance at $43 with CrownBet, but it defied the odds with a scintillating effort.

Under the riding skills of Damian Lane, Perpetual Crisis darted underneath runners down the Flemington straight to secure its biggest career win.

“The way he went to the barriers, I thought we might be in a spot of bother because he pulled hard,” Lane said. “To his credit, once I got a bit of cover he switched off.

“I held off as long as I could because I really didn’t want to go back to the inside. They just generally don’t finish off that well doing that in the straight races and to his credit, I pulled him over and he finished strongest obviously.”

The Darren Weir-trained runner looked the part on race day and Lane is hoping it can progress into a bigger race.

“He’s a lovely individual, good size about him,” Lane said.

“Hopefully with that win under his belt he can go on to better things.”

Darren Weir was jubilant post-race, but attributed most of the credit to racing manager Jeremy Rogers, who advised Weir to purchase the gelding.

“Got to give the credit to Jeremy, he buys a lot of these sorts of horses…Jeremy has to get the pat on the back here,” Weir said.

“He bought him for $20,000 and he said we should be buying him, it’s a good story.”

The result was a shock to punters, which got blown out of the Flemington quaddie, and the result also exceeded Weir’s expectations.

“We thought he ran well first up without having a lot of luck,” Weir said. “I said to the boys ‘ah well, it’s good prizemoney, may as well have a throw as the stumps’, didn’t think this would happen.

“It’s a nice result, got a good ride and obviously the horse is going better than we thought he is.”

The three-year-old won the Donald Classic by beating Styleman in May and Weir said it has potential, but has improved this campaign.

“He’s ran some handy races in those good VOBIS Gold races,” Weir said. “He’s obviously got some ability, he might have come back a bit better this time.”

The win set up a massive trifecta and first four payout with bookmakers. Ebenos finished second at odds of $4.80 and Land Of Plenty battled into third at place odds of $5.30.

The first four payout, with Fuhryk in fourth, paid a whopping $120,524 to give punters one of the biggest payouts of 2017.
