Newcastle quaddie form and free tips, Thursday June 23

quaddie of the week

BIG fields are the order of the day at Newcastle on Thursday and we have sorted through the form and given our tips for the quaddie.

Taking a quaddie bet is value-for-money and it provides some added excitement on the last four races of the card. The Newcastle quaddie features big fields and good horses in four legs which will offer value across the board.

It starts at 4.35pm with a maiden handicap which features some talented fillies and mares looking to kick-start their careers with a win.

Leg 1 – Pro-Ride Australian Maiden (1200m)

The Ron Quinton-trained Allegheny looked a certain winner at Wyong last start, but the filly was nabbed late on the line. The three-year-old has been well-backed in both runs, but punters are getting a good price this Thursday. The daughter of I Am Invincible is currently priced at $5 which looks like good value.

Current $3 favourite is War of the Roses which ran a solid race for second on debut. Trained by James Cummings, the four-year-old mare ran a very quick 1000m time on a heavy surface. It recorded 58.66 behind Silent Rush and that time should stack up nicely for this. Drawn wide, but it should be prominent in the finish.

Divergence and Hemispheres should both be included. They have both been backed solidly in the market and a win wouldn’t surprise.

Leg 1 tips: 1, 2, 3, 6

Leg 2 – Brendan Johnson Construction C2 (1200m)

Positive Charge is dropping back in grade significantly since running seventh in rating 78 grade last start. The Bryce Heys-trained filly ran third behind Alucinari in the Denises Joy two starts back which is incredible form for a midweek at Newcastle, so it will pay to forgive its last run and stick with it. It won its only start on this track and the $3 looks a good price.

Art Nouveau is from the John O’Shea stables and although its form appears a touch disappointing, it is well-regarded and it should be included in selections. It ran a good race for second on this track five starts back and it is three times placed at this distance. Bookmakers currently have it at $4 which suggests a good run is on the cards.

Fly Forward is our final inclusion. The John Thompson-trained gelding was a last start winner at Wyong in maiden grade and although it’s up in grade, it could add some value down in the weights. It likes to get back during the run before working home nicely, so consider at $8 for some quaddie value.

Leg 3 – XXXX Gold R60 Handicap (1350m)

In a wide-open field, the bookmakers opened Strada Lodge as the $5 favourite. The Ben Smith-trained gelding was disappointing last time out, but it did win back-to-back races last campaign. It has won on this track and it can handle all track conditions. It gets a 2kg claimer in the saddle and its odds haven’t budged all week. Win chance.

Local Hero also opened at $5, but has drifted out a half-point to $5.50. The Greg Bennett-trained gelding is coming off a last start placing, but it has been given 63kg for this target. Talented apprentice Andrew Adkins takes 2kg off its back which will help and despite the weight, it should be tough to beat in this grade.

Magic Panther is an $8 chance with bookmakers following a third placing at Hawkesbury. The Michael Costa-trained gelding is bred to handle tough conditions and it defeated a handy maiden runner in Pepperberry two starts ago at Kembla Grange. It has drawn wide, but it gets some weight relief and it looks a handy chance.

Leg 3 tips: 1, 4, 5

Leg 4 – Coco-Cola R65 Handicap (1150m)

Oh So Assertive goes well in a fresh state and it is dropping back from rating 90 grade to rating 65. It’s last two efforts have been poor, but the big drop in class will suit and it gets an inside draw with some weight relief from Adkins. Bookmakers have it at $5.50 which is a solid each way price.

Action Button is a four-time winner for trainer Jason Coyle which is yet to miss the money in three fresh runs. The four-year-old is also a four-time winner at this distance and it should be able to land on the speed from barrier four and give them something to catch. There is some unpredictability about this runner, but the $5.50 suggests a good run is expected.

Fly Forward is also nominated for this race and is a $3.20 chance. Include it in both races.

Leg 4 tips: 1, 2, 8
