What Adelaide Cup Day 2025
Where Morphettville Racecourse – 79 Morphett Road, Morphettville, SA 5043
When Monday, March 10, 2025
First Race 12:30pm ACDT

The time-honoured Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) headlines what is a stacked nine-race meeting out of Morphettville on Monday afternoon. Aided by several black-type events in the second half of the event, which is set to be run under clear skies and on a Good 4 surface. The rail will be back in its true position, with Adelaide Cup Day 2025 set to commence at 12:30pm ACDT.

Adelaide Cup Tip: Goldenstatewarrior

Goldenstatewarrior is a tough commodity to back some day, but his last three runs suggest the penny may have dropped. A winner of three races from 13 starts, the son of Golden Horn was an eye-catching winner three runs back at Geelong and has since run on strongly in both of his last two starts. He put in a brilliant Adelaide Cup trial in the traditional lead-up, the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m), when beaten a length after being forced to sustain a long run 800m out from home. He was beaten a length that day, and considering he drops 3kg and gains the services of Michael Dee on Monday, if Goldenstatewarrior can be held up for the last crack at the leaders, he looks the one to beat in the 2025 Adelaide Cup.

CS Hayes Memorial Cup Tip: Elphinstone

Elphinestone will likely enjoy stepping back to Listed company after a tough run in the Group 3 JRA Plate (1600m) when beaten 3.9 lengths behind Duke De Sessa. The four-year-old mare was caught wide the trip and did box on nicely to suggest with a smoother run in transit from barrier four on Monday, she will be hard to beat. Prior to that effort, she strung together consecutive victories, including when beating the in-form Smokin’ Princess at Pakenham three runs back. With a touch of luck in the home straight, Elphinstone should prove too hard to hold out and justify her favouritism with horse racing bookmakers.

Morphettville Guineas Tip: Macedon Rose

Macedon Rose wasn’t disgraced when finishing midfield in the Listed Desirable Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on February 15, and she is a filly who looks like she will appreciate the step up to the 1600m on Monday. She was only getting warm late last time out and finished 2.5 lengths off Sneaky Sunrise, who has since placed in Group 2 company. This looks a bit easier than the Desirable, and if Blake Shinn can find a bum to follow into the race approaching the home turn, Macedon Rose looks to be blessed with a strong finish and will be hard to hold out in the 2025 Morphettville Guineas.

Manihi Classic Tip: Taunting

Taunting could not have been any more impressive when winning the Listed City Of Marion Stakes (1200m) and as he steps back to the 1100m, he looks hard to beat despite needing to lug 59.5kg. Barrier 12 will be offset by his want to roll forward and take up the running, and considering the 1100m is arguably his preferred distance, he will have his rivals chasing a long way out. The big weight will mean the final 50m will be a bit of a worry, but with a bit of luck, Taunting would have run his rivals ragged by then.

Best Bet at Morphettville: Steel Tsunami

Steel Tsunami has put together a couple of gritty victories over the 1050m and 1000m here, and based on how he won last time out over the 1050m, the 1100m will be no issue. He is a natural frontrunner, so Rochelle Milnes’ 1.5kg claim will come in handy with the pair looking to cross the field from barrier 11 to take up the running, or at worst, land outside the lead. Milnes will look to up the pressure on the home turn, and with winning form on his side and a tactical advantage over some of his rivals, Steel Tsunami looks hard to run down.
