With the Adelaide Racing Carnival on the doorstep, a bumper nine-race card is scheduled for Morphettville on Saturday afternoon. HorseBetting’s James Herbert has broken down the card and found some best bets throughout the day, including tips in the featured R.N. Irwin Stakes and Redelva Stakes. We’re racing on a Good 4, with the rail out 11m from the 1200m to the winning post and then out 8m for the remainder.
R.N. Irwin Stakes – Bella Vella
The Group 3 R.N. Irwin Stakes over 1100m has pitted a star-studded field of seven sprinters up against one another just a fortnight before the Robert Sangster Stakes. We are willing to back the returning Bella Vella who has not been since the 2021 edition of The Galaxy. She is a Group 1 winner in the past and with three wins from eight first-up runs, she clearly looks to be over the odds, with $8 on offer from online bookmakers. She draws barrier one for her return run, which should see her lead this field up and hopefully kick away from them on the bend. There is no doubting her class and if the Bella Vella old is back, then the likes of Trekking, Swats That and Instant Celebrity will have their work cut out for them.

Redelva Stakes Top Tip – Heresy
Coming off a smart win in the P J Bell Stakes, the James Cummings-trained Heresy will be looking to build on her last start win and bring up a second win at Morphettville. Having drawn an outside barrier last time out, she was forced to go back to the rear of the field and ultimately finished better than her rivals. We expect the plan to be similar on Saturday having drawn barrier 14 once again for this assignment. With Direct set to make this a genuinely run 1100m sprint, look for Heresy to be thundering down the centre of the track late on and ultimately proving too hard to run down. We’re more than happy to take the $5.50 on offer from Unibet.

Best Bet at Morphettville – Eagles Crag
Patience will be crucial on Saturday as our best bet of the day comes up in the final race of the day where the Archie Alexander-trained Eagles Crag resumes from a spell. With three wins from six career starts, he is clearly blessed with above average ability and considering he was 1.5 lengths off Doncaster Mile winner Mr Brightside in August last year, he brings easily the strongest form lines into this race. From barrier six, we expect Harry Coffey to be aggressive early on and try and have the Fastnet Rock gelding settled in the one-one. If he is able to do that, we anticipate Eagles Crag will put a big gap on some of these.

Next Best at Morphettville – Strike Award
The John Hyam-trained Strike Award is set to resume from a 10-month spell, and we expect him to do so in style. The three-year-old gelding showed plenty of promise in his debut campaign and despite not being seen on a race day since June last year, we are giving him a big push in this. He has trialled up nicely leading in to his first-up run and with a high cruising speed, he should be looking to lead the field up and proving too hard to run down over the 1200m sprint.

Best Value at Morphettville – Eagles Forever
Having strung together consecutive victories, we’re hoping the Richard Wilson-trained Eagles Forever can make it three wins in a row. He enjoyed a perfect run in transit when winning at BM60 on April 9 over 1526m at the track and looked to have a fair bit left in the tank. Despite the tricky draw of barrier 13, we expect Jacob Opperman to have him settled up on speed throughout. If he avoids getting trapped three wide with no cover, he is clearly in career best form and with confidence behind him, will certainly take some running down.
