Malaguerra wins Group 1 BTC Cup at Doomben

Lee Freedman is back in business as a Group One trainer after Malaguerra scored a heart-stopping win in the BTC Cup at Doomben.

An Australian Hall of Famer, Freedman operates a stable with his brother Anthony out of Flemington and Malaguerra’s win on Saturday is their biggest since their training partnership was formed in late 2014.

In a thrilling finish, Malaguerra held off Dothraki with Japonisme taking the minor placing in front of gallant front-runner Two Blue.

Freedman said the win augered well for Malaguerra’s chances in next month’s Stradbroke Handicap.
