Horror race fall injures six apprentice jockeys at Taree

The opening race at Taree on Tuesday was a horror scene as six apprentice jockeys were injured in the Rising Star Series Heat.

The trouble happened when Bazza’s Bay, ridden by Samantha Clenton, appeared to break down when sitting on the speed in third position. That fall subsequently took down another four horses and their jockeys, with all five jockeys suffered minor to serious injuries.

The worst injuries were suffered by Clenton who was taken to hospital with a suspected broken collarbone and leg injuries. Jackson Murphy who was riding Blinkin’ Rules sustained leg injuries and was complaining of chest pains – reports state he could have suffered some internal damage, but no official report has been released on the extent of his injuries.

Murphy and Clenton were flown to John Hunter Hospital via helicopter with fellow fallen jockeys Kaylee Kirkwood (Lady Lobban) and Nyssa Burrells (Casino Bride) being taken to hospital via ambulance for precautionary concussion-related measures.

Taylor Marshall (Nonino) came out best of the injured jockeys after walking back to the jockeys’ room. Marshall was initially going to fulfill his riding engagements, but after complaining about light-headedness, Marshall was stood down for the remainder of the meeting.

Travis Wolfgram who was riding Can Dominate didn’t fall during the race, but he did suffer a concussion after his horse jumped one of the fallen riders and subsequently lashed back at Wolfgram and striking him in the head.

There has been serious concern also for the fallen horses. Bazza’s Boy was euthanised, but reports on the other fallen horses have yet to surface. We will keep you update on the latest news.
