Gallante proves superior stayer in Syd Cup
Gallante has staved off the challenge from the Chris Waller stable to win the $2 million Sydney Cup.
Making all the running in the 3200m marathon for jockey Kerrin McEvoy, the Lloyd Williams-owned stayer defeated the Waller-trained stablemates Libran and Grand Marshal at Randwick on Saturday.
Waller’s other runner Who Shot Thebarman finished fourth.
“Lloyd just gave me a heap of confidence,” McEvoy said.
“He told me the horse is flying, drops a lot in weight and handles the (soft) ground.”
The win gives Williams his fourth Sydney Cup success after victories with Major Drive, Gallic and Mourayan.
