Recent Furious Stakes winners
- The Michael Freedman-trained Manaal ($2.30) justified the short price in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, with the daughter of Tassort turning the tables on Ameena ($4.80) after suffering a narrow defeat in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on August 24. She had to give her fellow fillies 3kg in the weights last time out, but back to set weights appeared to be the recipe for success on Saturday, with Jason Collett getting into the perfect stalking position in the middle stages. She jumped evenly, biding her time mid-field with cover throughout the journey, with Too Darn Lizzie ($11.00) and Photographics ($151.00) striding out at a genuine tempo, allowing the back markers to come into play in the final 400m. The Chris Waller-trained Lazzura ($14.00) was the first to be presented down the middle of the course, with the undefeated filly giving a bold kick turning for home, while Zeitung ($8.50) was attempting to make a run back towards the inside under Rachel King. It was Manaal and Ameena finishing off best down the heart of the track; however, with the former just getting the head down where it matters most, as the Group 1 Sires’ Produce (1400m) winner proving too strong second-up into the campaign.
- Despite looking like she was struggling 200m out, Tiz Invincible ($4.60) ridden by Zac Lloyd has finished best to claim the 2023 Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m). Having claimed The Rosebud (1100m) at Listed level, online bookmakers were happy to take on the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained filly, sending her around as a drifting second favourite. Following James McDonald’s fall at Wyong on Friday, he was unable to make weight for the ride on Tiz Invincible, with recent Bart Cummings Medal winner Zac Lloyd picking up the steer. Having travelled in the three wide line with cover, Tiz Invincible was left a touch flat-footed 200m out. As Cigar Flick kicked clear, Tiz Invincible knuckled down inside the final 100m to claim victory over the fast-finishing pair Kimochi ($4.40) and Mumbai Muse ($11).
- Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott’s tenacious North Star Lass ($5.00) was able to fight back to win the second leg of the Princess Series, prevailing by a long head in the Furious Stakes at Randwick. The Zoustar filly led the field early on from barrier one under Tim Clark, and despite Willinga Beast ($6.50) laying down the gauntlet in the straight, North Star Lass was able to fight back and win the valuable Group 2 event. Champagne Stakes winner She’s Extreme ($3.70) finished 3.5 lengths away in third, while Paris Dior could only manage fourth ($3.30).
- Apprentice Brock Ryan enjoyed one of his biggest thrills in racing when partnering the Robert & Luke Price-trained Jamaea ($21) to victory in the 2021 Furious Stakes. Jamaea made an impressive comeback, finishing fourth behind Swift Witness in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes over 1200m, but under Ryan’s skillful navigation, Jamaea proved her worth by outshining several highly favoured rivals. With strategic planning and excellent timing, Ryan guided Jamaea through the race and got her to the centre of the track when it mattered most. Ryan had clear running room and he set Jamaea after the leaders with the filly showing her race craft and a turn of foot that rapidly closed the margin. Ryan showed just as much race craft ensuring that Jamea’s head was out and low in the final stride and they secured the win. At the line the official margin was a half-head, however, such was Jamaea’s closing speed that her win was better than the margin suggested.
- Peter & Paul Snowden snared a second win from the past three editions of the Furious Stakes when their undefeated filly Dame Giselle ($3.80) put away a smart field at just her second start. Aided by an expert steer from Tommy Berry, Dame Giselle would go on to beat Hungry Heart ($4.40) and Forbidden Love ($10) in a result that gave Berry a second straight win in the race, having won aboard Libertini in 2019.
- Having claimed the Silver Shadow Stakes first-up, the Anthony Cummings-trained Libertini ($1.18) was made to work to claim the Furious Stakes, but showed her class to prevail. Villami ($16) made a race out of it when leading for everywhere bar the winning post, with Tommy Berry needing to lift the long odds-on favourite to victory and add her name to the lineage of horses to complete the Silver Shadow Stakes/Furious Stakes double.
