North Star Lass fights back in Furious Stakes
Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott’s tenacious North Star Lass was able to fight back to win the second leg of the Princess Series, prevailing by a long head in the Furious Stakes at Randwick.
The Zoustar filly led the field early on from barrier one under Tim Clark, and despite Willinga Beast laying down the gauntlet in the straight, North Star Lass was able to fight back and win the valuable Group 2 event.
Champagne Stakes winner She’s Extreme finished 3.5 lengths away in third, while Paris Dior could only manage fourth.

Co-trainer Gai Waterhouse said the three-year-old filly was a “typical Waterhouse-Bott horse”, with plenty of fighting qualities.
“She is a typical Waterhouse-Bott horse,” Gai Waterhouse said.
“She was bought inexpensively, works her way through the classes and gets towards Group 1 races. We see it time and time again with our horses.
“This filly is on the Flight Stakes path, that’s where she is headed, she is such a good filly.
“We were confident with the going, today. They have to learn to run in wet going. What happens if you have an Oaks or a Group 1 coming up and they can’t run because they scratch their horse all the time.
“With this win, her value is $1 million. Before she was perhaps worth $300,000 but with this Group 2 win she is a $1 million filly.”
Following her all-the-way win, North Star Lass is now a $10 hope in the Group 1 Flight Stakes with online bookmakers.
