Recent Silver Shadow Stakes winners
- The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Ameena ($4.80) came with a withering burst to claim the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) in a grandstand finish. The daughter of Tassort put the writing on the wall last preparation, contesting some of the best two-year-old races across the nation, including a luckless effort in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) before being tipped out for a spell. She returned on the back of two strong barrier trials heading into Saturday’s $300,000 feature, with James McDonald doing the steering from stall 10. He had no choice but to retreat towards the rear of the field, as the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Chateau Miraval ($21.00) ensured a genuine tempo for the three-year-old fillies, while Kerrin McEvoy was happy to sit outside the leader aboard Silmarillion ($23.00). All the main market hopefuls were left chasing from the back-half of the field, with Group 1 Sires’ Produce (1400m) winner Manaal ($2.20) the first to mount a challenge turning for home. The Michael Freedman-trained filly appeared to have them all covered, before Ameena and Erno’s Cube ($12.00) loomed large in the final furlong, with Ameena getting the better of Silmarillion in a photo finish thanks to a James McDonald drive.
- Adam Hyeronimus and the Waterhouse & Bott training duo have combined to take out the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes with Autumn Ballet ($17) in the penultimate event at Randwick. The now three-year-old filly took out the Group 3 Black Opal on debut to put the writing on the wall, and returned in terrific order, storming down the centre of the course to secure victory in the first leg of the Princess Series. Estriella ($3.50) took luck out of the equation under Jamie Kah heading forward to sit outside the leader and just got wayward out in front, while the eventual winner stalked her every step of the way for Hyeronimus. The Gary Portelli-trained Kimochi ($7) closed nicely and looks set for a good preparation, while market favourite Kristilli was pulled up rather early in the straight by James McDonald.
- Zougotcha, trained by Chris Waller, emerged victorious in the initial race of the highly anticipated Princess Series at Royal Randwick. However, the Godolphin stable is anxiously awaiting a rematch as their filly, In Secret, endured an unfortunate second-place finish. During a crucial moment in the straight, In Secret encountered traffic that hindered her progress, while Zougotcha skilfully manoeuvred through the inside, ultimately claiming the victory. Zougotcha, guided by jockey William Pike, fended off In Secret, the $3 favorite, to secure a triumph with a margin of 1.75 lengths. The closely contested race also saw North Star Lass finish a respectable third, with odds of $31. Zougotcha’s triumph in the Silver Shadow Stakes event marked the first time in her short but promising career that she achieved a stakes win. Chris Waller praised the horse as a “decent horse” following the performance.
- Having avoided the carnage back in the field where Xtremetime and Brenton Avdulla fell, Swift Witness managed to skip clear to claim the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes. Winning hoop Tim Clark was wide and on speed early stages before allowing Swift Witness to ease slightly and settle around fourth in the run as her conqueror in the Reisling Stakes, Glistening, led the field around. Clark was forced to be patient towards the inside of the field, but once she found clear air, Swift Witness bounded clear and held off the fast finishing Latino Blend.
- Having jumped cleanly from the barriers, Tommy Berry was quick to take Dame Giselle to the front of the field and from there, she was never headed in the Silver Shadow Stakes. Having won the Group 2 Reisling Stakes in the autumn, it was the I Am Invincible filly’s second victory at Group 2 level. Having fending off September Run’s challenge with 150m to go, she needed to fend off Thermosphere and did so with determination. The margin was a head on the winning post with Dame Giselle getting the job done as favourite with pre-race favourite See You Soon scratched at the barriers.
- Sent out as a $1.50 favourite upon resumption, the Anthony Cummings-trained Libertini was an impressive winner of the Silver Shadow Stakes. The filly managed to clock a class record of 1:07.93 over the famous Randwick 1200m, with jockey Tommy Berry declaring the winner the best filly he had ridden since Overreach. Ridden confidently by Berry, she strode up to level with the leaders at the top of the straight then found another gear and careered away for a dominant win.
