Fibian Flashes home to victory at Rosehill

Weight hasn’t stopped Flash Fibian from landing a telling blow to assert his class at Rosehill.

The Paul Murray-trained three-year-old was sent out the $10 outsider in the seven-horse field in Saturday’s Ascend Sales Trophies Handicap (1200m).

But the underdog finished strongest to beat Gibraltar Girl ($4.80) by a long head with $4 favourite Lubiton a short neck away third.

Carrying 61kg, Flash Fibian was able to race with cover under jockey Tye Angland and let down quickest to score an impressive victory.

The horse was narrowly defeated in the Listed Heritage Stakes at Randwick when first-up on September 17.

He was then disappointing in the Group Two Roman Consul Stakes and the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes on October 1 and 15 respectively.

“He didn’t seem to put in so we just decided to freshen him up right up,” Murray said.

Murray said while blinkers had not worked for Flash Fibian as two-year-old, their return had helped him to record his third win from 10 starts.

“He’s a gelding now, so with $100,000 races you might as well just pick up what you can,” Murray said.

Angland said Flash Fibian had relished the inside draw and drop in class.

“From the soft gate we had a beautiful run,” Angland said.

“He had to carry a big weight but showed a really nice turn of foot.”
