English jockey Tom Marquand has been taken to hospital for further assessment after falling heavily from Ronstar at Randwick.

After starting the day on a high with a Group Three double aboard Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained juveniles Away Game and Prague, Marquand’s luck took a turn for the worse.

The hoop hit the ground heavily when Ronstar clipped heels near the 800 metres in Saturday’s Ranvet Handicap (1400m), the horse suffering a fatal injury and unable to be saved.

Racing NSW doctor John Saxon said Marquand was complaining of a sore shoulder and neck and he was sending him to hospital as a precaution.

“He’s also showing some signs of concussion so I am organising for him to go up to the hospital and get assessed,” Dr Saxon said.
