How to bet on the Expressway Stakes
Every decent Australian horse racing bookmaker will have betting on the Expressway Stakes available.
Many of them will open an early market so you can wager on the race a week or so in advance. Unlike many of the bigger races, the Expressway Stakes acceptances are only done a few days before the race so you won’t find a market many weeks in advance.
Aussie bookies offer all of the usual bet types on the race and you will have the option of using ‘boosted odds’ or other racing promotions at some of them.

3rd – Malkovich (NTD)
Recent runnings of the Expressway Stakes:
- James McDonald and the Peter & Paul Snowden camp combined when King Of Sparta ($4.20) stormed home to claim the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m). After thrashing his Magic Millions Sprint (1200) rivals, the son of I Am Invincible wasn’t quite as dominant in the Group 2, but was similarly impressive, as James McDonald placed the five-year-old in the perfect stalking position. Malkovich ($14.00) was always going to ensure a strong tempo, and he did just that, scorching to the front under Joshua Parr. When the sprint went on, there was only one runner you wanted to be on, as King Of Sparta kept close enough throughout to put himself in striking distance, then responded when McDonald asked for more.
- From stud prospects to Group 2 winner, Mariamia bolted home to take out the 2023 Expressway Stakes in stylish fashion. After winning impressively first-up at BM88 level, just four nominations saw plans change for the Pride camp and elect to risk placing Mariamia in the Expressway Stakes. Taking on short-priced favourite and Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile in the process. Tim Clark got Mariamia to jump perfectly from the wide draw, successfully lobbing into the one-by-one position throughout. Meanwhile Golden Mile got a few pairs further back than most punters would’ve anticipated, after missing the start by a length. The speed was strong throughout the 1200m weight-for-age contest as Kahawaty looked to ping the lids from the inside, as did the market second elect, Forbidden Love, who was very disappointing and proceeded to finish towards the rear of the small field. Mariamia was impressive storming past the leaders before kicking clear to score for a dominant 2.6-length victory over runner-up Golden Mile, who did more than enough on return.
- A text-book front-running ride by Tim Clark saw three-year-old Overpass cause an upset in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes at Rosehill. After three of the first six winners at Rosehill led throughout, Clark followed suit and pushed the Bjorn Baker-trained colt out of the barriers to take up the lead. Last seen when sixth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes in October, Overpass had two trials in preparation for his first up assignment, which had him rock-hard fit for the 1200m race. Race favourite Anamoe got back to last from barrier three and was unable to make up enough ground out wide, finishing off well to run into third in his first run since the Cox Plate. It was all honours to the winner though, with Overpass proving too hard to run down.
