EXCITING filly Crown Witness has maintained its unblemished racing record after taking out the Winter Lodge Handicap at Flemington.

The +260 second favourite at Crownbet.com.au raced just behind Madeenaty (-333.33) and pounced at the optimal time to run the topweight down in the shadows of the post.

Chateau Griffo rounded out the placings to deliver -250 to Sportsbet.com.au customers.

Madeenaty moved away at the 200m mark and looked to have done enough to win but Ben Thompson unleashed the three-year-old at the vital stage to secure the victory.

Trainer Stuart Webb admitted he thought the race might have been over.

“I thought the leader (Madeenaty) had skipped away then but she was brilliant to the line, as she was at Sandown.”

The win was Crown Witness’ second win from two attempts after it defeated Hell Or Highwater in the New Season Handicap.

The filly looks to be one of the hottest prospects currently racing in Australia, and the trainer is bullish about what it can achieve.

Webb said he knew the stable had a special horse on its hands from the moment he saw it.

“From early days she’s been the best young horse in the place and she’s gone on with it,” Webb said.

Webb is unsure where he will go next with the talented filly, but he believes the horse can jump in journey.

The trainer said even though Crown Witness was bred to be a sprinter and built races like one, he expects the filly to handle 1200m and potentially to the 1400m.

“She’s been in the system a fair while so we’ll gauge where we are at.

“There’s the Quezette in two weeks and I think she would be brilliant over 1100 metres around Caulfield.”
