Canterbury quaddie form, odds and tips for Wednesday, July 27

quaddie of the week

THE rain continues to frustrate punters after Warwick Farm was called off last Wednesday, but the weather should hold off for this Wednesday’s quaddie at Canterbury.

Having hosted a meeting on Saturday, the Canterbury surface held up reasonably well which is a good sign and we should get some quality racing.

Big fields are the flavour of the day for the quaddie which kicks off with a rating 72 handicap at 3.15pm and Crownbet.com.au has all the markets available now.

Leg 1 – Rating 72 Handicap (1250m)

Cannyescent was scratched last Saturday where it was the $3.20 favourite, but will instead line up at midweek level. The quality three-year-old has won two from five starts and it performed well in a trial leading into this race. Its last start for seventh in the Eskimo Price should be forgiven and it will likely be well-backed in this. Looks a strong opening leg anchor.

Include former New Zealand runner Antonio Giuseppe which finished only 4.9 lengths behind Valley Girl last start. Now with Chris Waller, the three-year-old by Shocking was a good winner on debut at Avondale before taking on some tough opposition in its next two starts. That form should stack up well at this level and the inside draw is a nice bonus. Should be at nice each way odds.

Leg 1 tips: 4 (anchor), 11

Leg 2 – Tab More Than Just Winning R71 (1250m)

Joseph Pride lines up Bonete which has won only two from 25 starts, but it drops right back in grade after finishing fourth behind Elle Lou last start. That came in rating 85 grade and although it rises up in weight, there are no major threats in this race and it’s showing enough speed to warrant inclusion.

Gone To Paris was handily beaten by Dee Nine Elle last start, but it drops in weight for this and it usually saves its best for Canterbury. The Paul Perry-trained filly has placed here three times from four starts which includes form on rain-affected tracks and it could feature here in what is an even race.

Wutai Mountain must be included on its last start win at Warwick Farm. The Chris Waller-trained filly was too good for them late and conditions don’t change much for this start. It handled the slow track well and the minor drop back in distance isn’t of concern. Punters are likely to back it again so put it into quaddie selections.

Leg 2 tips: 5, 8, 11

Leg 3 – Theraces R72 Handicap (1550m)

Imported runner Quick Defense has had three Australian runs for one placing and that came behind subsequent city winner King’s Officer. The Chris Waller-trained gelding had moderate form in Europe before coming over and it makes its own luck in front which is a good attribute. Hugh Bowman takes the ride which is a positive sign and it might pay to follow any positive market moves.

Ready Already is worth looking at after its three length win last start at Hawkesbury. The Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding put away the field with ease, despite carrying 59kg, and that bodes well for this. Both of its two career wins came on a slow track which is ideal and the nicely-bred type could go back-to-back here.

Hogmanay finished sixth behind Art Nouveau last start which has subsequently run well since. The Waller-trained three-year-old won well at Scone prior by 1.5 lengths and jockey Rory Hutchings is riding with more confidence now. The son of Lonhro isn’t suited by the 58kg, but it could win this at decent odds.

Leg 3 tips: 4, 9, 14

Leg 4 – Schweppes R67 Handicap (1100m)

Lucky Fish has been well backed in all three starts this campaign, but has disappointed punters. The Mark Newnham-trained gelding finished second behind Sir Bacchus at Rosehill three starts ago, but it was unable to follow that up in its last two starts. The son of Exceed And Excel owns plenty of talent which is why punters continue to back it, so include it here based on that.

In a field which doesn’t have much form, there are a host of chances which should be paying good each way money. Magic Jewel, Thorsborne, Elite Hong Kong and Secret Lies are all winning chances, but they would need to improve to defeat Lucky Fish. There is only one last start winner in the field which signifies its evenness.

Leg 4 tips: 3 (anchor), 7, 9, 11, 12
