Brown, Zahra incur Randwick riding bans

Jockey Corey Brown is $2000 lighter in the pocket and will spend a week on the sidelines after using his whip too many times on third placegetter Sense Of Occasion in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Racing NSW stewards suspended Brown for a week and issued him with the fine for using the whip 11 times before the 100m in Saturday’s feature race at Randwick, six times more than permitted under the rules.

Sense Of Occasion finished third to champion Winx in the 2000m race, a week after also running third in the Doncaster Mile.

Brown’s suspension is due to start after next Saturday’s All Aged Stakes meeting.

Mark Zahra rode a winning double on Saturday but also was suspended for the second time this week for careless riding about his first winner Shoals out of the Group Two Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m).

Zahra’s suspension from Saturday starts immediately and runs until April 20, while the jockey has an appeal scheduled on Monday against a suspension he incurred on Wednesday at Sandown.
