Breeders Stakes on the cards for upset Flemington winner

Two-year-old filly Ploverset upsets stablemate and race favourite Madeenaty to win the 3aw Is Football Stakes

THE run of Lindsay Park’s two-year-old continued at Flemington on Saturday when debutante Ploverset upset its stablemate in the 3aw Is Football Stakes.

Ploverset was a $22.80 chance at Ladbrokes in the race which suggested stablemate and $1.45 favourite Madeenaty would be tough to beat, but the daughter of Street Boss finished off too strongly for its rivals.

The two-year-old filly was ridden by Cory Parish who settled the two-year-old on the back of Sam’s Image before presenting late to down Madeenaty in the shadows of the post.

“Early on in the race I didn’t think I was going to get cover,” Parish said. “She was nice and happy.

“Linda (Meech) just sat out a little bit and I just peeled off her back and finished off fantastic.”

Parish has a very good strike rate for punters in Victoria this season and he’s happy to be getting the opportunities from the Lindsay Park stable.

“I really appreciate the opportunity that David, Ben and Tom have done for me today,” he said.

“(They have) given me this win and I’ve got to ride Fuhryk in the big one today, so hopefully I can have two-for-two.”

Co-trainer Tom Dabernig was quick to give Parish plenty of credit for the ride, who rides the filly in work at Lindsay Park.

“This will give him confidence. Obviously he’s riding Fuhryk in the group one,” Dabernig said.

“He’s an underrated rider, he does a lot of work for the stable and our policy is that we reward the riders that do the work.”

Dabernig will target the Breeders’ Stakes with Ploverset, which is by Street Boss which sired The Quarterback to multiple straight-race victories.

“She’s by Street Boss and The Quarterback is by Street Boss, who is a very good straight horse,” Dabernig said.

“It (Breeders’ Stakes) looks an ideal race for her in a couple of weeks…looks perfect.”

All of the pre-race hype was surrounding $1.45 favourite Madeenaty which was fancied in Golden Slipper markets, but after getting hot prior to the start there could be some excuses for the talented runner.

“She was left in front and she got herself hot and sweaty before the race,” Dabernig explained.

“We’ll just see how she pulls up. She’s been in work a fair while and she had that trip to the Gold Coast.

“She certainly wasn’t disgraced today. When she was at the Gold Coast and the Magic Millions lead-up races she won, she was nice and relaxed, so whether the time between runs had her arriving here today on the fresh side…but we’ve got a few days to see how she is before we make those decisions.”

The win from Ploverset continued the hot run of form for Lindsay Park which took out the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes last Saturday with Catchy.

“I think that’s 23 two-year-old winners for the season,” Dabernig added. “We’re having a fantastic run.

“You can’t do it without the horses, but we’ve got the facility to educate them.”
